Question
Thursday, March 18, 2010 12:24 AM
hello, could anyone assist in finding a "fonts and colors" theme for visual studio 2008 that matches the dark theme used by expression suite 3 (particularly blend). i searched all over microsoft.com and google, but have not been able to find anything that comes close. it would seem basic functionality for two software products that were designed for use in the same work environment. moving from visual studio 2008 to expression suite, then back again using the default color themes can be hard on the eyes.
i have seen some well crafted ideas in blogs and comment pages, but most only change the text editor in vs2008. i am looking for the full visual studio 2008 application (file menu, solution explorer window, toolbox, etc.) to duplicate the expression suite 3 dark theme.
thanks!

Hi Philos100,
Thank you for your reply.
I've read the thread that you posted in the Visual Studio Extensibility forum and done some search on this issue.
I'm afraid that VS2008 IDE theme could not be changed since it is the part of shell. I agree with Chao's reply. It might not be changed even we resort to VSX.
I can understand your favor on Expressoin Suite 3 dark theme. Microsoft continues to improve the product and provide better user experience to use the product for the later version. Thus, we need your suggestion.
If it doesn't disturb you a lot, you can try providing more information on your concern like why you need this feature.
To feedback it in the formal way, you can submit this suggestion on our Connect portal site:
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/
Every feedback submitted will be evaluated carefully by our engineers. If this suggestion is reasonable and other customers have the similar concern on this feature, they will let us know their comments further through that portal. This would be helpful to improve Visual Studio products.
Thank you for your help.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

Hi Philos100,
Thank you for your post.
By default, Visual Studio IDE doesn't support that configuration, which means you may resort to some add-in to do the job. Visual Studio Extensibility should be the place to consult for better answer.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

Hi Philos100,

i am looking for the full visual studio 2008 application (file menu, solution explorer window, toolbox, etc.) to duplicate the expression suite 3 dark theme.
Based on your description, it seems that you want to change the color theme of the entire VS IDE.
For "Fonts and Colors" feature, we can customize the way the text appears in the different editors. However, for Toolbox, Solution Explorer, it's the shell. By default, VS2008 IDE doesn't support to change color of the shell. It's by design. That's why I would suggest you to try some add-in. The engineers of Visual Studio Extensibility will evaluate your concern and let you know their comments further.
For VS2010, it seems that IDE supports to change the shell color.

hello and thanks for the info.
blog link...the vs2010 extension seems to be a partial work around. viewing the screen captures, the "gray" theme doesn't match expresion suite's white font color. the solution explorer background is white, should be dark gray. the uninstall process is a bit tricky with the possibility of requiring registry key deletion. and the theme is for vs2010, where i am looking for a vs2008 solution.
i posted this question in the Visual Studio Extensibility forum as instructed, but as of today, they are suggesting that it is not the correct forum.
