Question

Hi there
Quick question.
I read the other day in a blog that an SCCM 2012 task sequence by default downloads all required data (referenced in each task) to the client cache, and then runs it from there. This is as opposed to running it directly from the DP (I know running it from the DP still involves downloading data, that data though isn't cached I believe).
That being the case, is it possible to configure the location of the client cache?
It is currently Windows\System32\ccm - could the the location of that ccm folder be changed?
Assuming what I have read about SCCM 2012 task sequences downloading all data into cache before running, if I placed that cache on, say, a hidden partition, that could mean that should a machine ever need to be rebuilt, the task sequence would run from the server as normal but all the required data would be available in the hidden partition. I mean that as a theory - I have no idea if it's possible, that's why I am asking.
1E Nomad 2012 does a similar thing, it will store OSD and application data in the Nomad cache; again though that is on the system partition and would be over-written when the machine gets rebuilt (it's designed for use in building other computers, not itself).
Seems to be a waste of data/bandwidth having to download it all again for a rebuild.
Can anyone advise if this is possible? Or must the ccm folder reside in a specific location?
Best regards
JHH

Hi,
You can use the SMSCACHEDIR=C:\temp when you install the sccm client to Point the cache to a different location. I haven't tried putting it in a hidden directory or partition..

Thank you for replying Jorgen, I was aware of SMSCACHEDIR, be interesting if that would work with a hidden partition.
Thanks again.

Hi John,
if you'd like to Change the Cache Directory after its Installation, try one of These scripts: http://www.david-obrien.net/2013/02/07/how-to-configure-the-configmgr-client/
I also didn't try to put it on a hidden Partition, but I was able to put the Cache on a UNC path (which is most likely unsupported). So just try the hidden Partition and come back to us with the result! :)
