Ethernet connecting to the wrong network.

Question

Saturday, May 7, 2016 1:16 AM

I live in a large building with internet shared by many people. Under my desk is an ethernet port, which has 3 different networks plugged into it.

It used to automatically connect to the one I wanted, but then the password on that network changed. Because it couldnt connect to that one it defaulted to my neighbours network instead. Now I cant get it to swap back to connecting to the network I actually want to use.

Anyone have any hot tips?

thanks.

Normally network config on Ethernet is done at the switch level and changed at the switch, not normally at the end device \ PC.

So how are you determining that you have connected to the wrong Ethernet network?

Can you provide any further information on the setup of "ethernet port, which has 3 different networks plugged into it" as this would be unusual I would say. Have you contacted the provider of this connection?

Make sure your default gateway is pointing to the network you wish the data to go to.

it is in the ipv4 properties of the adapters. Make sure there is only one gateway in there.

Hello,

Open Network Connections and go to Known networks section. Here you can forgot the connection to which Windows automatically connect. Then connect your desired network.

Hope this helps, Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I could be wrong but this only seems to be an option for wireless connections.

I can forget the details for the network in the list of wifi known networks, but then when I reconnect the ethernet cord it still defaults back to that network.

I agree with Mr Happy. There is nothing that Windows can do, because you are connecting through an Ethernet cable to an Ethernet port. What happens beyond the Ethernet port you plug into depends on the wiring between there and the actual Internet connections. If you are seeing the wrong one, it is in the wiring between your port and the device you can see.

Have you tried removing the three connecting cables then trying them one at a time? One must be the "right" one if it worked before.
