Default Apps not launching for users with Roaming Profiles

Question

Monday, August 17, 2015 9:43 AM

When trying to run a default App in Windows 10 (i.e. Weather, Photos or Calculator) while using an AD user configured to store a roaming profile, they di not launch. There is no error message, the icon for the App turns grey and a grey loading bar appears at the bottom of the icon.

There doesn't appear to be an issue when using an AD user account without a roaming profile.

I've found a fix for the problem of the not-launching default Apps on a other web-page:

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/allow-deployment-operations-special-profiles-windows-8

You must enable a policy with enable app deployment for special profiles.

This will enable the use of the default Apps with roaming users and profiles.

The other problem of the Menu Start settings and some other settings (like Edge browser) not saving at log-off, isstill not solved.

Hi,

Is it the whole User Profile was set as romaing profile? For this problem, it obvirously caused by romaing profile, to make deep research with this problem, it would be better to Process Monitor to captuer these app start process because this problem cause by caused data file lose.

On the other hand, please also check romaining profile settings if there is any problem with it.

Thanks for your reply, the user was a standard user account with just the AD profile path set to \Server\Username$\Profile. No profile was created before hand so this would have been generated from the local Default user profile on the PC, so therefore should not have had any errors on that front.

Unfortunately Process Monitor and Event Viewer did not lead to any tangable results.

How about using Administrator account make a test, this can be permission problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, just granted administrator access and unfortunately it still failed.

Just to add to the strange issues, when logging off and logging back in again, any changes to the Start Menu such as pinning or unpinning are lost and the menu itself resets to default. This does not appear to be happening for the Taskbar though, which appears to remember it's settings.

Hi,

I realise this is an old thread, but I am having the same issue and cannot sort it.  Did you ever resolve it?  It is the apps not loading that is the issue for us.

I understand it is to do with the %LOCALAPPDATA% but I can't find a solution.  Any pointers would be gratefully received!

Unfortunately not Matt, which means we haven't moved forward on Windows 10 for now.

I also have this same problem with Windows 10 and roaming profiles. The default apps don't launch and turn grey with a grey bar underneath it when I click on them. And I also have the problem that changes in the Menu Start won't save when logoff, but other settings like taskbar and settings from other applications (like Firefox) does, as mentioned in a reply from another user.

One difference is that I have a Samba NT4-style domain controller instead of a AD domain, but that doesn't matter in this case as users with a AD domain also have this problem. The problem is in Windows 10.

I hope there will be a fix for it. Untill that, I'll keep Windows 7.
