"You can't open this location using this program" error from Office and Adobe Apps when trying to access SharePoint

Question

Thursday, January 12, 2012 5:09 PM

I get this error whenever I try to use MS Office or Adobe X apps to open files from a SharePoint library (the apps and SharePoint are all installed on the same server)?  When I googled this issue the "solution" supposedly is to install the "Desktop Experience" feature on the server, but that did not solve the issue.

Connecting to SharePoint from apps not installed on the server appears to work fine.

This is a DEV system based on Server 2008, SharePoint 2010 and MS Office 2007.

Thanks

rene

Hi,

Normally, enabling desktop experience feature should work. My suggestion is to reinstall the Office or Adobe programs on the server.

Hope that helps.

Hi Rene,

Thanks for your post.

Cause: This only affects Windows 2008 Server users.  So it's really just developers looking at saving to SharePoint from the Windows 2008 Server environment, you would also need Office installed.  The issue is with the restricted access the Windows 2008 server allows by default.

Note: This only applies if your OS is Windows 2008 Server.

Resolution:
Open Server Manager > Features > Add the "Desktop Experience" feature.

Andrew Woodward has a post on the issue for more information.

I hope this will help.
