Office applications slow over VPN connection

I am having an issue with any Office docs or spreadsheets that are opened when remote. If the spreadsheet or Word document is opened before a VPN connection is established, it opens at a normal speed. Once the VPN connection is established, the Word document or spreadsheet takes 2-4 minutes to launch. The application usually just sits at the excel or word splash screen. It does not matter which spreadsheet or word doc it is, it will open slow every time 

I have tried disabling add-ins. 

Does anyone know what the normal operation steps when opening spreadsheets or word docs is that would cause such a slowness to occur? Had anyone seen similar issues?

Hi,

In my opinion, office is trying to access the internet (update check, help etc) and the connection through VPN is slower than normal.

I suggest you try this method and check the result:

Go to File- Options- Trust center- Trust center settings- uncheck "let office connect to online service from MS to provide functionlity that's relevant to your usage and preferences".
