unable to add a shared printer in Windows 10

Question

Tuesday, May 29, 2018 2:40 PM

Hi, I work at a community college in NJ and I am unable to add shared printer to Windows 10 workstation systems.  When I get to the "Select a shared printer name", I type in \IP Address of print server\ and I see the list of shared printers on the print server.  However, when I select a printer, the below error message appears and I am unsuccessfully able to add the printer.  I tried adding the same shared printer on a Windows 7 workstation and it works great.  For some strange reason, it just does not allow me to add the printer on a Windows 10 workstation system.  I already tried turning off the Windows Defender Firewall and turned on Network discovery and file and print sharing, but none of these setting changes worked either.  If anyone can please help me with this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Please see below for the error message that I get when trying to add the printer.

Thank you,

David D'Ascoli

Does Print Management work to add the printer? (search start for print open Print Management)

It's most likely to do with drivers.

Check that the printer has x64 bit drivers installed on the printer server.

On the printer properties, you'll see 'Sharing' tab.

Then see 'Additional Drivers' here you'll see if there is a x64 bit driver

Besides, check if you have installed the same kind of printer on machine, if so, change the new printer port and test,

More information here:

Adding printer with "Internet Printing" gives "Windows couldn’t connect to the printer. Check the printer name and try again."

Hi,

I checked the printer driver and made sure that the correct driver was installed and that the x64 driver was installed, but, that did not resolve me trying to add a shared network printer to a Windows 10 workstation system.  This is really baffling since it sees the shared printers when I type in the \<server IP address>\ but I get the above "Connect to Printer" error message as shown in my first post.

Thank you,

David

Hi,

When I ping the server, I do get replies back successfully.  I was just curious to know, is there a way to see if there are any in-depth (comprehensive) error logs that explains why the above error message (shown in the first post) is occurring?  The attached error message is so generic and it really does not explain what the actual cause or reason is for the printer not being able to be connected to or added via shared printer access.

Thank you,

David

This is an old thread but it may help someone later

You cannot access a windows 10 machine with the ip address you need to use the device name

e.g   \MyPC\Sharename

if you do not have a DNS server map it throught the HOSTS File

Is this a windows 10 Workstation in that it's a desktop, or is it running Windows 10 For workstations?

That makes a huge difference in drivers..
