USB 2.0 Devices won't work in USB 3.0

Question

Hi All,

I just started having problems with USB 2.0 devices working when connected to a USB 3.0 port. I have my mouse, keyboard and other devices plugged into a USB 2.0 hub that's plugged into a 3.0 port but nothing works. To get the keyboard to work I've plugged it into the back of the PC into a 3.0 port. But the wireless mouse will only work when it's plugged into a USB 2.0 port that's on top of the PC. I've checked for driver update to the USB Root Hub (Hub 3.0) and there wasn't any. I've uninstalled both USB Root Hub (Hub 3.0) and rebooted and that didn't work. I've tried a new USB 2.0 hub and that didn't work. The last Windows 10 updates were over a week ago so that shouldn't be a problem.

I've been using this same setup for several years without a problems.

Do anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Thanks,

Paul

Have a look with USBDeview (download links towards the bottom of that page).

That allows you to see each driver install for the mouse, keyboard etc. Uninstall on the mouse ones reboot and try again.

Thanks for the reply but I'm having a hard time understanding what USBDeview this has to do with a USB 2.0 hub not working when it's plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I have a 12 port USB 2.0 hub with the wireless mouse, keyboard, 2 printers, card reader and others USB cables are plugged into the 12 port USB 2.0 hub. When I plug the 2.0 hub into a USB 3.0 nothing works. I have 2 USB 2.0 ports that's located on the top front of my PC. When I plug the 2.0 hub into one of the USB 2.0 ports everything works.

I know that USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 so I'm trying to figure out is why my devices aren't working when their plugged into a USB 3.0 port? And I've tried various USB 3.0 ports.

Thanks again,

Paul

Hi pjscott51,

Thanks for posting your query.

Have you made any changes before the issue happened?

It seems that drivers have a compatibility issue. If possible, please visit manufacturer's website and install the latest available drivers for devices in compatibility mode.

You could refer to this post to disable and re-enable the USB controllers:

From your OP the problems started, so this worked previously?

I mentioned USBDeview as each USB port keeps its own driver for a device. I have seen USB not work as one driver on one port went wrong. So I used USBDeview to remove all references to the device and got it working again. Thinking the same may apply here.

Thanks all for the replies.

Reading Yilia's link I see that I'm not the only person having problems with USB 2.0 and 3.0.

I've decided to do a fresh install of Windows 10 in hopes that this'll fix my problem.

Again thanks for the help,

Paul
