Question

The tags summary in OneNote 2016 is not working properly. It does not show all the tags, just some of them depending on which page I'm in. It worked properly until a few months ago (and still works on my desktop PC), but doesn't work properly on my Surace Pro 4. From Googling about this issue, I see that other people are having the same problem. It has nothing to do with refreshing tags or selecting whether from 'this notebook' or 'all notebooks' (or any other settings). I've tried this. I've also tried reinstalling Office 365, and repairing, with no success.
I do not have any add ins. Everything else appears to work fine.
Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hi,
Does this issue happen in all notebooks or just a certain one?
Do you have your notebooks stored on OneDrive? If this is the case, we may try to close the notebooks and then reopen them to see the result.
If above doesn't help, we may also try to clear the local cache for the notebooks and then see the result. To clear the cache, exit OneNote, fine the cache folder from the following location:
drive:\Users\username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0
Try to rename the cache folder by appending 'old' to the file name. After that, start OneNote to see the result.
Hope this helps.

Steve,
The cache folder solution seems to have worked! Thank you - much appreciated.
I see that a new cache folder (called 'cache') has automatically been created. Two questions:
Can I delete the old one?
If this problem arises again on my Surface Pro 4, shall I just do the same thing again?
Kind regards,

Good to hear that! To answer your questions:
>>Can I delete the old one?
The cache folder is used to store the cache of the notebooks you stored in the cloud. If you have made sure that all local changes have been synced up to the cloud, it's definitely safe to delete the old one.
>>If this problem arises again on my Surface Pro 4, shall I just do the same thing again?
Usually, it's more likely a sync error in OneNote that caused this problem. Clearing the cache is a common troubleshooting step to resolve the sync issue. But, as I mentioned before, please first make sure all local changes have been synced up to the cloud before performing these steps.
Hope this helps.

I have a similar issue and will definitely try the cache solution. In addition another problem I have is when trying to actually apply the tag to a handwritten line to convert it into a ToDo tag. it used to be that all I had to do was either start a check box and then write next to it or apply the check box after finishing the sentence and the tag would recognize it and show up in the tag summary. now this doesn't work and the only work around I found is selecting everything I need tagged and then applying the tag. is there a solution for this issue?
Thank you!

Good advice--but I tried this and it did not work.
You suggest it's a sync issue. What else can I do? Everything you list above (stored on OneDrive, syncing, renaming cache), I've done.
Help! Only eight of my tags are showing up now--out of 40 or more tags.

Creating a new cache solved the problem for me when this problem started. Using Office 365 V1811

I started having this issues a couple of months ago. I just tried this clearing the cache solution, and it worked.
Thank you,

Hi,
Long time since this post was done but while trying to fix my problem with OneNote I tried your solution but without success.
However, I noted that when I unchecked the "Show only unchecked items" my missing Tags showed up. Are some Tags set to be "Checked by default?

Stellar response. Fixed my issue. I followed the path you listed, renamed the cache file by appending OLD to it, and restarted OneNote. Once the sync was done find tags works great. Thanks for being helpful. It's a rarity on the internet these days.

It works only once. As soon as you add a new ToDo it keeps missing them. The same problem is with search. Searching for text across notebooks is unreliable also.
This makes OneNote 2016 pretty unusable while OneNote 10 is crippled functionality-wise.
Sad.
