Office 2016 DocRecrypt

Question

Thursday, January 24, 2019 6:22 AM

From this Microsoft Document it seems that the DocRecrypt can be used in Office 2016, however I cannot get it to work, it always throws error message "Input File:test.docx (inplace) Error: Error_NoCertToUse Last Result: 0x80004005".

Can anyone get it working in Office 2016? As the Download Center only have DocRecrypt Tool 2013 available for download, does the 2013 tool compatible with Office 2016?

Hi Kevin,

Before using the DocRecrypt too to remove password for Office documents, the Administrator need to use Group Policy to push registry changes that associate a certificate with password-protected documents. This certificate information is embedded in the file header.

Later, if the password is forgotten or lost, use the DocRecrypt command-line tool and the private key to unlock the file and, optionally, assign a new password.

Based on your error description "Error: Error_NoCertToUse Last Result: 0x80004005", it seems that there is no private key certificates configured in your environment. Please check it in your scenario.

Best Regards,
Winnie Liang

Hi Winnie,

I have followed the document to generate a cert and deploy the cert to the client, and then changed the registry setting to include the cert hash value in the EscrowCerts as well. I have also add the cert with private key to the admin computer that run DocRecrypt. But it still didn't work.

Can you confirm if the DocRecrypt 2013 Tool work with Office 2016? If it does, is there anyway I can check whether the correct cert has been embedded in the file header?

Hi,

What version of Widows did you use?

As far as I know the tool only available for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012.

Regards,

Emi
