Checkboxes not working

Question

Wednesday, September 26, 2018 9:36 PM

I have created a template in Word 2013 with checkable boxes. When I open the template by right clicking (eg so that I can edit it) the checkable boxes work. When I open a document from the template the checkboxes are no longer checkable. Note: template is used by more than one person and is not stored in a Custom Office Templates folder but that should not make a difference should it? How can I make the checkability carry over to documents based on this template?

Hi,

Based on your description, I created a sample about your problem.

Go to Developer tabe- insert Checkbox control- save as the file as .dotx template file format.

1. I right clicked the file and selected Open, the check box worked.

2. Open a blank Word document, then go to New- Personal and open the template, the check box worked.

Try to create a new Word document and check the result.

If this problem only appear in a specific file, please send this file to our email address:

When I open  Word  if I click on New I can only open a new blank document. There is no 'personal'. If I click open I can browse to the template and open it. But it opens as a template that I can edit, and the check boxes work. In order to use it as a fillable form and keep the template in its original form,  I then need to 'save as' a Word document (doc or docx).  This is annoying because with multiple users it is too easy for someone to unthinkingly click Save instead of Save As.  If I just browse to the template without first opening Word and double click on it, it opens as a new document (not a template) which is good - but the check boxes don't work. It opens in Compatibility Mode, I don't know if this is the issue but if so don't know how to alter settings so that new documents based on the template open as docx documents.

Hi,

Normally we put .dotx file to Template folder: C:\Users\username\Documents\Custom Office Templates and then we can open from New directly:

Please check if this will help you.

Emi

No it does not make any difference. In any case this is not a good solution since this template is used by several users (in a work situation) and we have it on a shared drive that we can all access. I tried saving the template to Custom Office Templates in My Documents and then following your instruction but still don't have the option to open it from "new". I do not get a screen that has a Personal tab. It only has 'featured' (but nothing is featured).

I am still wondering if the problem is because when a new document is generated from the template it opens in Compatibility Mode? Maybe checkable boxes were not available in the older forms of Word? In your example the document created is a docx. Is there a way to change things so that my template, which is a dotx creates documents in Word, (docx) not Word (compatibility mode, doc)?? I've also noticed that there is a formatting error in the document that opens and I bet it is because it is a doc, not a docx.
