Security Warning for Microsoft Shared .DLLs With Expired Certificate in 2016

Question

Wednesday, July 25, 2018 9:05 PM

After upgrading a test system from a prior version of Office to the more spiffy 2016 we are seen random Security Warnings on documents.  When you go into the Advanced option, Word sees expired certificates for various DLLs from 2016 that I believe are related to the Smart Tag feature.  Anyone have any idea what these are for and how to get rid of them?  The prior version of Office was uninstalled (and system rebooted) prior to installing Office 2016.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Smart Tag\ folder

FPLACE.DLL
FDATE.DLL
MOFL.DLL
IMCONTACT.DLL
FSTOCk.DLL
METCONV.DLL
FPERSON.DLL
FBIBLIO.DLL

C:\program files (x86)\common files\microsoft shared\vsto\ folder

vstoee.dll

Hi Eddie,

When did the issue occur, when you open Office 2016 every time or use any specific feature? If possible, would you mind to share any screenshot about the security warning window or advanced option details?

Please check the following article to make sure the older Office version has been removed completely from current computer:
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/manually-uninstall-office-4e2904ea-25c8-4544-99ee-17696bb3027b?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US#OfficeVersion=Office_2007

Then go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office 2016, click Change > Repair to repair Office. Check if everything can get better.

Best Regards,
Winnie Liang

The issue appears to depend on the document itself.  We're still in pilot mode trying to work out the kinks before a wide-scale upgrade.  If I open one of the documents inside the prior version of Office it appears to use the Smart Tag feature, which is now called Actions.  If I delete the Smart Tag folder, the issue does not occur with these documents.

Good suggestion on reviewing the doco on uninstalling prior versions of Office.  I pulled up the web page with those instructions last night, but have not had a chance to review.  I just wish when I uninstalled Office, or just the Smart Tag feature by itself, that Microsoft actually got rid of things COMPLETELY without any type of manual intervention.

Sadly, the documentation does not include how to get rid of the aging Smart Tags feature that apparently came with Office 2007.

How about the issue currently?

Have you tried to copy these files to other drive for backup. Delete from C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared folder. Then repair Office and confirm if the issue can be fixed.
