How to determine what type of VS 2015 license I have

Question

Friday, February 17, 2017 7:13 PM

How do I find out (using Microsoft VS 2015 or other means) exactly what kind of license for VS 2015 Professional I have? My workstation admin has installed the license key and VS about box now shows I have a licensed copy, but there is a distinct difference between what the different types of licenses allow, and VS doesn't give me any clues.

For example, the following visualstudio.com website page says that a "Visual Studio Professional w/MSDN" license comes with one TFS user CAL. At the moment, my organization is blocking me from accessing our TFS server because they claim they don't have any free TFS licenses. I'm certain they don't understand about the free TFS CAL that comes with the VS prof w/MSDN license, but I cannot verify if this is the type of license I have.

Because software licensing in my office is managed by an external organization, whom I cannot speak to directly, and MS has extremely poor and inaccessible customer support for their products, I'm asking the MS developer community to help me out here.

Hi,

If you go to File > Account Settings, it should tell you the kind of license. Here you can see that I have the Enterprise edition with a license of MSDN Subscription:

Hi ShaStew,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Refer to your description, your issue is about the license confirmation. Our forum is to discuss Visual Studio WPF/SL Designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System, and Visual Studio Editor. It is better to consult with the Microsoft licensing specialist through directly call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) and you can get more detail information about your license.

>> For example, the following visualstudio.com website page says that a "Visual Studio Professional w/MSDN" license comes with one TFS user CAL.

Meanwhile, you can confirm with your workstation admin to know more detail information and your company purchased a subscription, please navigate Visual Studio Subscriptions Customer Service Center to verify your subscription account type.

As far as I know, there are three options to purchase the VS professional version, please check this: https://www.visualstudio.com/vs/pricing/. We can active the professional version through Standalone license, Standard Subscription and Cloud Subscriptions.

BTW, I found one similar issue: Detecting Visual Studio license type / distribution channel  and you can have a look at and see if it is helpful for your issue or not, thank you for your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience.

Best regards,

Sara
