Hi All,

In one of Server 2012 R2 machine Windows update is getting failing with error code: FATAL: CBS called Error with 0x800f0831 in Windows update.log.

The server is configured to get updates from WSUS Server but the installation is failing with event error "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0831"

I had tried to install an update manually but the same error. Can anyone faced the same issue.

Regards

Ansar

Hi All,

I had the same problem and I found the solution for me. Search in CBS.log if  you have some line with CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION. Search around in the log and you may have an old KB that you have to redeploy before to deploy you problematic KB.

In my side, I had to redeploy the KB3205401.

Good luck

Hi,

First can you do :

sfc /scannow

chkdsk /f

then use this troubleshooter

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/512a5183-ffab-40c5-8a68-021e32467565/windows-update-troubleshooter

Hi,

I ran the said commands sfc /scannow and chkdsk /f, after that i tried to install one update manually but the same error.

When i tried to install the trouble shooter i am getting the error "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from staring".

Doest sfc /scannow say you it is ok or not ?

If you don't remember, launch again and say us the result.

Hi Ansar,
Please have a try using the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command to install updates from within Windows and then see if the error is returned again, you could follow the step-by-step guide in the blog as below: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askcore/2011/02/15/how-to-use-dism-to-install-a-hotfix-from-within-windows/
Best regards,
Wendy

This was the output for sfc /scannow command

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Hi,

we are facing the same issue,

sfc /scannow did not report anything and dism too.

the issue is only for kb4012216 and 4012213, other updates are deployed for this server (2012R2)

update deployement from same wsus to others 2012R2 servers work fine.

Hi Wendy,

I had tried to install the package using DISM command but got the below error.

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

For more information, review the log file.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

This issue is in only one server. Windows Updates got installed in all other 2012 R2 servers from WSUS.

Having the exact same error.. and with the WannaCry ransomware running around..really need a solution.

Have tried everything we possibly can find on technet, and the internet for that matter with no luck...

Any solutions from MS directly ??

Hi,
Have you tried to install the update manually and see if the error occurs again?
And I would suggest you try to reset the windows update components and install the update again, you could follow the details to reset the windows update components from: https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/help/971058/how-do-i-reset-windows-update-components
Best regards,
Wendy

Apart from the suggestions on this forum, I would recommend running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth cmdlet. If none of these suggestions work out, please share the following logs:

c:\Windows\windowsupdate.log

c:\Windows\logs\CBS - This folder in zip format.

Work for me! But the KB was KB3192392! Thanks.

I tried to install an update manually in that machine, but failed. Tried with different updates also, but none of them are installing.

Ran the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth and confirmed that no component store corruption detected.

I will try to reset the windows update components and will inform the status.

The hint to search for CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION does the trick! Was confused, that a freshly installed server got problems with windowsupdates.

The hint to search for CBS_E_STORE_CORRUPTION does the trick....Installed old missing KB and resolved the issue. Thanks.

It worked for me as well, and in my case the update was kb4040967 ;)

**Note the KB detailed within the CBS log after "**Store corruption, manifest missing for package:". In my case it was KB3081320. This KB was not installed within control panel or referenced in PowerShell (get-hotfix | select hotfixid) however, the manifest file was present within the folder C:\Windows\servicing\Packages.

I had to download the detailed KB and then remove via DISM to remove the corrupted manifest file. See link below for guide.
