Synchronization with your iPhone failed for 1 items - IPM.Schedule.Meeting.Resp.Pos

Question

Monday, August 9, 2010 3:39 AM

Synchronization with your iPhone failed for 1 items.
The following items couldn't be sent to your mobile phone. They haven't been deleted. You should be able to access them using either Outlook or Outlook Web App.

        Item Folder:       Inbox
        Item Type:       IPM.Schedule.Meeting.Resp.Pos
        Item Created:       3/08/2010 3:09:25 a.m.
        Item Subject:       Accepted: Test 4

This not only effects iPhones also had this for Nokia devices. The problem occurs with the Accepted: or Declined: email that come back from booking a meeting with a resource or person. It is related to the unread/read mark.

In my client if I leave these Accepted/Declined messages unread I do not get the "Synchronization with your mobile failed for 1 items" once I have read the message I get the error. Basically what's happening (or not happening) is that the message remains unread on my mobile device. So the unread/read mark is not transferred to the mobile device.

When I then look at the message on the device it says "This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted. Ask the sender to send it again using a different format or email program. text/plain"

If I open an Accepted/Declined message on the device before it has been read on the client it reads fine "Your request was accepted"

It's like reading the message in the client is changing the format of the message some how.

It appears to be an problem with Microsoft clients (Entourage & Outlook 2011) I have tested this with Apple Mail app and the issue does NOT occur. Apple Mail is also an EWS client like Entourage and the new Outlook so this eliminates the idea that it is all EWS clients.

We have the exactly same problem in our Exchange 2010 environment with iPhone 4.0/4.1 Users.
Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks in advance!

We're also seeing this.  We're just beginning our user migration to Exchange 2010.  The message is the same, and the circumstances are similar with appointments being sent, accepted or rejected, then synchronization fails for the appointment.  We're on 2010 SP1 and applied update rollup 1 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2407028) a couple weeks ago.

We're also seeing this on multiple device types, Windows Phone 7 included.  Other device types are iPad and iPhones.  An article on Experts Exchange suggests that this may have been identified by Microsoft as a bug in Exchange 2010 and a fix is in the process. http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/Q_26374879.html

See the notes at the bottom.  One person opened a case with MS and thier response to him is posted there.

It would be nice to see something from Microsoft about this, confirming that this is in fact a bug that is being worked on.  At least then I could move forward knowing a fix is in the works instead of taking a leap of faith on hearsay alone

We are seeing this issue when the invitations are Sent from Entourage 2008 WSE (13.0.8) or Outlook 2011 (14.0.2). The responding client can be any one.

Server is Exchange 2010. I sent a test invite to other users from Outlook 2011, and all responses to the invite had this sync error on both my iPhones and my iPad. The responses came from both Mac and Windows users running a variety of clients (Outlook 2007 or 2010 on Win, iCal/Mail.app, Entourage 2008 WSE and Outlook 2011.)

I sent another test invite to the same people from iCal (on the same machine and account as the previous Outlook 2011 invite) and everything processed without an issue.

It seems to be related to the invitation being created in Entourage or Outlook on the Mac.

Any Ideas?

Hi Guys,

First post, be nice :)

I just wanted to point out i've been following this issue in our environment for some time now (exchange 2007 sp1 rollup[latest])

It particuarly affects users that have delegates attached to their inbox with re-occuring appointments

I might be wrong, but I think it can also be aggrovated when a user accepts the meeting on the ipad/iphone before the delegate does.

Also, when a delegate accepts a meeting request on their outlook/client, then the iPad/iPhone user attempts to do something with the alert on the tablet screen.

This same thing is happening in my enviroment too and there is no deligate to those affected users. I Installed exchange 2010 two weeks ago that is when it started. Also those affected users are using iphone v4.2 and office 2011 for mac.

I think it has something to do with iphone or outlook 2011 but I am still digging into it.

Monday, February 7, 2011 7:46 PM

I am also seeing this in my environment. iPads and iPhones syncing with Exchange 2007 SP2, update rollup 4.

Has anyone heard of a hotfix solution from Microsoft yet ?

I assume this is an ActiveSync issue as it's not related to a specific device. Interesting that it's also happening on different versions of Exchange.

It would be nice to see something from Microsoft about this, confirming that this is in fact a bug that is being worked on.

Opening a support case with MS will get you that if the support team can in fact determine you are hitting a bug; and if they do the case is free. With the millions of device/software combinations possible it is impossible to guarantee an issue one person is hitting is always identical to a similar looking issue someone else hits.Microsoft Premier Field Engineer, Exchange

The error occurs when:

  1. I create a meeting
  2. I invite people
  3. Those people responds
  4. I read (mark+unmark) the response in Outlook on the computer
  5. I sync the iPhone (or pushed)

I'm also seeing this in an Exchange 2007 SP3 Update Rollup 2 environment specifically with iPads syncing.

Has anyone contacted Microsoft and opened up a case or heard that this is a bug within ActiveSync perhaps?

Hot-fix coming soon?

Wednesday, March 9, 2011 9:05 PM

So it seems as if MS released a hot fix (Update Rollup 3) for this issue on 3/8/2011 but only for Exchange 2010 SP1:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2492690

Hot fix issue:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2457304

I just opened up a support ticket with MS to see why this was also not included in Update Rollup 3 for Exchange 2007 SP3?!

Stay tuned...

Thursday, March 10, 2011 8:53 AM

I'm seeing this issue too. Can anyone confirm this is fixed with Update Rollup 3?

Thursday, March 31, 2011 9:47 PM

Does Update Rollup 3 still exist, the links above do not work ?

Thursday, March 31, 2011 10:00 PM

They pulled out RU3 and will be re released in one or two weeks.

Anyone have luck with the re-re-released RU3?  Did it here and we're still getting errors.

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 9:52 PM

I've got a client with several users experiencing this issue frequently.

In this case, the Exchange server is Exchange Online - Office 365.

Can somebody from Microsoft respond here and let us know that you guys are aware of the issue, and any idea what the cause is, and when a resolution can be expected?

Thanks.

Monday, June 20, 2011 9:27 AM

yeah I also want to know what is going on with this?

Monday, June 20, 2011 10:03 AM

Hello Dave,

Did you tried recreating the EWS Virtuall Directory?
Seems like the issue is going on since quite long time.

I would like to know how many users are affected with the issue?

Hi,

We have the same issue... any news on this?

We are running Exchange Server 2010 SP1 RU4, installed RU4 two days ago...but did'nt help... it seems that its even worse now...

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 4:09 PM

Hi,

We are having the same issue with users experiencing this problem in Office 365 (Exchange Online 2010).

Both iPhone and iPad are affected with this problem.

These users also use Goldmine CRM and synchronize their appointments with Outlook. But for some reason when they try to sync with iPhone or iPad they get these errors.

Anyone with a clue on this?

Thursday, October 6, 2011 6:30 PM

Anyone experiencing this issue with RU 5 KB2582113?

I'm seeing this for one specific customer in our multi-tennent environment running RU 3 v3 with just HTC EVO 4Gs on Android 2.2. Also, that same customer is experiencing the issue detailed in KB2556352 on a Mac with Outlook 2011, which the issue is fixed in RU 5.

Monday, October 10, 2011 11:24 AM

We're also having this issue with Exchange 2010 RU4 for users that have the CRM Dynamics 2011 Outlook Add-in installed.

Can anyone confirm if RU5 fixes this issue?

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 3:57 PM

I didn't have reports of this issue until today, but we are running RU5 and I just had someone report this exact error.

Monday, October 17, 2011 8:41 AM

Well that sucks... Has anyone found a fix for this?

Thursday, December 8, 2011 9:27 AM

Any answers yet if any of the RU's worked and any fixes guys?

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 2:41 PM

same issue here on Exchange 2007.. is there really no solution for this problem??

Thursday, December 22, 2011 2:43 PM

What version of iOS device is in use?

It would be helpful if everyone included..

  • Exchange server version
  • Exchange service pack level
  • Exchange rollup update level
  • The mobile device model and OS version
  • Is the item not sync'ing a one-time appointment or a recurring meeting?

Here is some data on our config

Exchange 2010 SP1 (14.1 Build 218.15)
Server OS (version and SP level): Server 2008 R2 SP1

iOS devices range from 4.x to 5.0.1

Both recurring and one-time appointments.

It's something to do with Outlook 2011 and/or Exchange. I only use Outlook 2011 when testing things or answering escalations/tickets at work. I use Mail+iCal primarily. Here is the general scenario:

I send an invite out using iCal. The invitee accepts or declines it. I get the notification back. That's normal.

Now, I launch Outlook. If the accept/decline response came from iCal or Outlook 2007/2010 then no sync error happens. If the response was sent from a user running Outlook 2011, then the Sync error occurs.

Example: I send my boss an invite for tomorrow via iCal, she responds from Outlook 2011, I get the response in Mail...all is well. I launch Outlook 2011 two weeks later and I get the Sync error for that response she sent. I send the same invite to another user who does not run Outlook 2011, no error on the response.

And the meeting does actually sync to the iOS devices, so this message is generally just an annoyance...but we are dealing with calls/tickets from users who see an "error message" and create an incident.

Let me know if you need more info or elaboration.

Thanks

Ross

What is the Update Rollup level of Exchange? In general I recommend all of my customers use iOS 4.3.3 or newer.Microsoft Premier Field Engineer, Exchange

I think we had to undo the Rollups that were applied to do an issue they caused with the servers in our environment, so right now we're on the base-SP1 server.

After the 1st week in Jan when the End-of-year update freeze is lifted we are scheduled to apply SP2 to the server. We shall see what results come from that.

Most iOS 4 devices are gonna be running 4.3.3, but only a fraction of our users have not upgraded to iOS 5. No updates on the iOS side have had an effect on this...

Thanks

Does anyone know if there is a equivalent solution for Exchange 2007 concerning http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2457304/en-us ? it seems that kb2457304 exactly describes that problem.. but it is only available for Exchange 2010

our environment:
Exchange: 2007 SP3 (Version 8.3 (Build 83.6))
OS: Windows 2008 SBS SP2
Mobile devices: iPad1 iOS 5.0.1 / iPhone 3GS iOS 5.0.1 / iPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1

In case any one researching this issue stumbles on this page like I did. I have found was currently is "The solution" and I will be implementing it shortly.

Per Microsoft is it a bug with Exchange.

Here is the Link with the rollup that contains a fix, apparently this is an issue with "All" Mobile devices.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2529939

Good luck to all and I plan to post if this solved out issue or not.

A user in our company was having a similar issue with calendar items created in Outlook 2013. Some calendar items would not display on his iOS device. He was also getting the intermittent email with the subject "Synchronization with your iPhone failed for 1 items".

The solution for us, was to change the Show As: option on the calendar item to anything but "Working Elsewhere". When calendar items are set to Show As Free, Busy, Out of Office, or Tentative, then the item shows up just fine on his iPhone.

The "Working Elsewhere" option is new in Outlook 2013.

We were facing synchronization problems on all kinds of devices (Android, iOS and WP8), and it seems "Working Elsewhere" was causing the problems. Thanks for posting!

That working Elsewhere does cause half of the issue, but so does recurring items made from outlook 2007 to outlook 2013 on exchange 2007. Still having issues. I see a fix for 2010 update rollup 3 but not for 2007.
