Using WebDAV and IP-Adress

Question

Wednesday, February 27, 2019 11:34 PM

Using Word or PowerPoint I cannot connect to a local WebDAV-Server as long as I use an IP-Address. It pops up "Starting..." and freezes.

Excel works great though.

When I use "localhost" or any other domain everything works again.

Any idea how to use an IP-Adress to connect WebDAV and Word?

Hi Jacky,

Based on your description, please try to open a document in Word/PowerPoint,go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trusted Locations.  Check "Allow trusted locations on my network". Try to add the your local WebDAV-Server path manually to check if it works.

First please refer to this article about how to make Microsoft Office to Work with WebDAV Server: http://www.webdavsystem.com/server/documentation/ms_office_read_only/

Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.

Please following these steps and check if your environment is correct.

Then you can try these steps about troubleshooting Office file types fail to open from server: KB2123563

The registry sub keys for Office 2016 is: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Internet

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur. Please refer to this article about how to back up and restore the registry in Windows: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Please try to clear Microsoft Office WebDAV cache in registry. Microsoft Office reads WebDAV server options when connecting to server first time and stores them for later use. If your server settings has changed during development (or you just fixed some server issues) you may need to delete this settings. The Microsoft Office WebDAV cache is stored under the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Internet\Server Cache\

To clear cache just delete all keys under this key. In a development environment we suggest always clearing the cache if your WebDAV server class has changed or after authentication scheme has changed. As an alternative to deleting cache, you can just reconfigure your server to run on a different port.

Note that in production environment usually you do not need to clear this cache or change port as soon as you server settings do not change often while Microsoft Office will re-request server options after some time.

Hope it's helpful. If you have any updates, feel free to post them back to let us know.

Best Regards,

Herb

Didn't work for me:

"the entered path can not be used as a trusted location for security reasons"

Hi Jacky,

Sorry for my delay. Have you resolved the issue yet? Did you follow all methods in my above reply?

You can also add the IP address to Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer.

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
  2. In the Select a Web content zone to specify its current security settings box, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
  3. In the  Add this Web site to the zone box, type the URL of a site that you trust, and then click Add.
  4. Click OK two times to accept the changes and return to Internet Explorer.

You can also try mapping WebDAV to Windows Explorer. To set up WebDAV as a mapped drive, follow these steps:

1) Run Windows Update to make sure the latest patches are installed on your system

a) Start > All Programs > Windows Update.

2) Install any necessary updates and reboot Windows if necessary

3) Make sure WebClient Services are active and starts on Startup

a) Start > Search > Type: services.msc > Select Services.

b) Find WebClient > Select Properties.

c) Select Automatic > OK > Exit.

4) Modify the Windows registry. This will enable Windows to accept basic authentication for SSL and non-SSL shares

a)  Start > Search > Type: regedit > Select regedit.

b) The registry key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > WebClient> Parameters.

c) Select BasicAuthLevel (if it does not exist, create the key).

d) Change the value to 2.

e) Select OK > File > Exit.

5) Reboot Windows

6) Map your WebDAV share as a network drive

a) Windows 7: Go to Start and right-click on Computer. Select "Map Network Drive."

Windows 10: Open Windows Explorer. Right click on Computer. Select "Map Network Drive."

b) Insert your WebDAV URL as the location (Folder).

c) Complete the desired settings (i.e. reconnect on login and use different credentials).

d) Login using your credentials in the window that pops up:

The WebDAV share will then connect and you can access it as a mapped drive through Windows Explorer.

After Mapping, please try to open documents from the locations. Will the issue still occur?

If you have any updates, feel free to let us know.

Best Regards,

Herb
