EventViewer--how to repair it and/or Microsoft Management Console? Running Windows 10 with all the latest patches. Upgrade from Windows 7. EventViewer worked for a while then something bad happened.
I did something, I don't know what, and now EventViewer won't run, throws exceptions below. Microsoft Management Console is also fingered as a culprit in the "Report to Microsoft" dialog box.
How to reinstall EventViewer for Windows 10?
I have read this thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/corrupt-event-viewer-after-upgrading-to-windows-10/9db0e4ab-a6f1-46bf-8e40-c5f85f8d6d24
I tried the suggestions there but they did not work.
Thanks for any advice.

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I will certainly help you with this.
This issue may occur due to some system file corruption. I suggest you to run System file checker. System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow the below given steps:
Press Windows key + X, select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.
In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.
Restart the computer.
If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps:
Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.
In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Close the command prompt and restart the system and check if it works.
Please post back with the results, we will be glad to assist you further.

Hi Paul,
How about the issue?
"how can I get a Windows 10 ISO? I'm a licensed user of Windows 7."
For Windows 10 1511 version and later, the previous version product key could be used to activate it, we could download the Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft.

For your questions about Event Viewer, Event Viewer is a tool that displays detailed information about events on your computer, it is not used by other programs, it is used to troubleshoot problems and errors with Windows and other programs.

Hi Paul,
Is your error also "Unhandled Exception in Management Code Snap-in FX:{b05566ae-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510}”?
Were there any error message when you run the “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” command? Please post back with the results.
Considering this issue occurred recently, we could perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point if it is possible.
Here is a similar case for your reference, we could delete the following registry to have a test. Please backup the registry key before we made any modifications to it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns\ FX:{b05566ae-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510}

If above method doesn’t work, I am afraid that we need perform an in-place upgrade repair to refresh the machine. In-place upgrade repair won`t affect the personal files and data but some desktop programs may need to be reinstalled and some settings need be configured again. Boot from a Windows 10 ISO, choose "upgrade" install.
Best regards

Hi Rick_Li,
Thanks, I don't get errors when I ran "the “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” command? Please post back with the results." I might run it again.
For System Restore, unfortunately I don't think I saved the registry backup that was good. I was playing around with CCleaner, which normally works fine even with Windows 10, and maybe it automatically deleted a vital registry key.
I tried the Bleeping Computer thread suggestion, and there was no key set for "KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns\ [[VALUE NOT SET HERE]] so instead I copy and pasted: "KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns\ FX:{b05566ae-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510}". However, this generated (or seems to have generated) a bunch of 'sub-keys' when I ran Event Viewer, and it did not solve the problem (same as before), and now I cannot delete these sub-keys. Maybe I'll reboot and try to delete them. I did backup the registry but when importing, it fails to import the old key for MMC\SnapIns ("insufficient privilege and/or used by another program"). I'll try rebooting.
As for Windows 10 ISO--unfortunately, I wish I had the ISO, but I did an "upgrade from Windows 7" via Windows Update, it took over 24 hours, and did not leave an ISO, unfortunately. BTW, how can I get a Windows 10 ISO? I'm a licensed user of Windows 7.
A general question: my experience is that a lot of programs are never used. While I like EventViewer, Task Manager does work, so why should I care about EventViewer and Microsoft Management Console? Are these programs used by other programs? Are they 'mission critical' for the operation of Windows 10? If not, I can live without these programs, it's a loss but not a huge loss. Please advise. I will check later this week for answers and will mark your answer as correct later. I thank you for your time.
