Installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 fails with Generic Trust Failure

Question

Monday, March 21, 2011 12:27 PM

Hi,

I've been trying to resolve this issue since last week but I've run out of options to try.

I tried using the ISO and web installer that's publicly available.

I've also tried using the ISO and web installer that's available via my MSDN subscription.

All result in the same error. I've also tried burning the ISO and tested that it's working on a Windows 7 laptop.

After searching a while, I came across a similar question on this forum and I was told to open a new thread.

The workstation where the installation is failing has several visual studio installations on it (VS 2003 up to VS 2010) because we have a lot of legacy software that are yet to be migrated.

It's operating system is Windows XP 32-bit with SP3.

I've used the log collection tool and I've upload the output here:

http://cid-35e2fe324a1306ac.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/vslogs.cab

Can someone please let me know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi raistlin,

Sorry for the late.

I suggest you to check the EventID in Event Viewer and you can get more detailed helpful information in it. You can also share this information with us.

In addition, I find a similar thread like yours. You can check it. Hope this helps.

Hi raistlin,

Thank you for posting.

File SetupUtility.exe (c:\8c1c4c851cd667dd5186694043\SetupUtility.exe), failed authentication. (Error = -2146762495). It is recommended that you delete this file and retry setup again.

800B0101 error code is a general error. Typically, I suggest you can try to extract the installation files into your local hard disk from ISO. Then, try to reinstall it again.

In addition, I suggest you can check this case and this case which was similar like yours.

If you have any finding, please feel free to let me know.

Hi Larcolais,

Thanks for replying.

I've already tried using an ISO that's been burned to a DVD. I've confirmed that this ISO works properly on a different workstation.

However, on my workstation, I'm still getting the "Generic Trust Failure" error:

I've also tried updating the root certificates as detailed in one of the links that you gave.  Still the same problem.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks again.

I have a bit more information, but I still need help.

It seems that the error is being caused by the fact that the Microsoft Code Signing certificate that we have expired last March 7.

How does one go about updating this certificate?

Bumping to say that I experience that exact same problem while trying to install Visual Studio 2010 Premium. I also noticed that I get a "generic trust failure" when trying to install .NET framework 4. So from what I understand, this error is not strictly related to Visual Studio 2010 but also occurs for other products!

Here's the (relevant part of the) log from trying to install .NET 4:

Spent 1h on online chat and 1h with a support guy on the phone (to try to install VS2010), still no luck with that... Anyone got a solution? This is getting ridiculous!

Thanks

Hi Bill (and others),

Problem may lie in the expiration of the signing certificate. Please have a look at this thread for further details: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vssetup/thread/88da4438-9c59-411c-99c4-1df7866f24ff

In a nutshell, the workaround that did work for me was to simply change my computer's date back to before the certificate expiration date (something like february 2011) for the time of the installation...

Hope it'll help!

Francois

Why didn't I think of that! That works like a charm!

It's still Microsoft's fault because their installer is screwed up, but this is an easy workaround.

Thanks!!
