Unable to passthrough physical drive server 2012 core

Question

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 5:36 PM

I'm having trouble with passthrough in Hyper-V on server 2012 core install I have just done. I followed the exact same steps on a 2008 machine and had no issues

Here we go in order

Power off VM's

Power off physical 2012 machine

Add hard disk to host machine (I've tried a couple, 1TB or 2TB)

Boot up physical machine, use disk manager to bring disk online and initialize, take disk offline

Edit one of my VM's add a hard disk (IDE or SCSI makes no difference) and try to use pass through to physical disk

Problem - Option to use physical disk is greyed out

What am I missing?

I'll add a screenshot once I'm allowed

Thanks

Hi,

Are you remote managing the server core in a domain environment or in a workstation environment?

Are you using a Windows 7 computer with RSAT or Windows Server 2008 R2 server to remote manage the Server Core?

We receive similar issues these days, users use Windows 7 computer with RSAT or Windows Server 2008 R2 server to remote manage the Server Core, some feature are not supported in Hyper-V management console in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

They use Windows 8 with RSAT or Windows Server 2012 to remote manage Windows Server 2012 server core, this resolve the issue.

You may also try to add passthrough disk to virtual machine using PowerShell command.

Hi,

> hoping RSAT will be updated for windows 7

Current, we have RSAT for Windows 8, you can install it to remove manage Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2008, and Windows Server 2003.

But just like we can’t use RSAT for XP to remote manage Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, we can’t also use RSAT for Windows 7 to remote manage Windows Server 2012. There will be no such update.

Hi, thanks for the reply. It seems Windows 7 RSAT is my issue. I've just added the powershell management tools for hyper-v and was able to add the disk fine that way. It doesn't show via RSAT gui but it is available on the VM itself. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and here's to hoping RSAT will be updated for windows 7

Congratulations for your post, worth millions, I confirm that solution is to administer Hyper-V 2012 server from a Windows 8 client machine and not from Windows 7 or a Server 2008R2 either. The previous version of Hyper-V manager for Windows 2008R2 is not gathering all data from Hyper-V Server 2012, and the disabled option (grayed-out) for Physical Disk option is caused by this issue. Hyper-V Manager for Hyper-V Server 2012 is included in Windows 8 as a feature, that you will have to enable. To manage disks from the Windows 8 Client trough mmc, you will have to change the firewall settings for Remote Volume Management rule on both client and the hyper-v server.

Is there any way at all to manage physical disks with Server 2008R2 or Windows 7?
