Excel spreadsheet takes a long time to open.

Question

Wednesday, June 6, 2018 7:33 PM

Hi,

We have a spreadsheet that has a lot of formulas and is ridiculously slow to open in Excel 2016 (Office365).  The file is only 13MB and takes more than 5 minutes to open.  When trying to open the file in Excel 2010 (used as a test only), you get a warning that the file is corrupt and cannot be opened.  There are no warning messages when opening the file in Excel 2016.  We have tried opening Excel 2016 in safe mode and then open the file, same result.  We have tried setting the Workbook Calculations to Manual and then open the file, same result.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi,

Where do you store the Workbook?

First please check if the Workbook is blocked, please right click the file- select Properties- under General Tab- select Unblock:

Then you can try to open and repair the Workbook:

Please try this method and let me know the result, I'm glad to help you.

Emi

Hi Jack,

Try the solution suggested by Emi. If it wont work then, try repair application from control panel.

Thanks for the suggestions. When we unblock the file, Excel 2010 shows it as corrupted and repairs it but all of the formulas are then broken. Excel 2016 will open it and all formulas work but it still takes 5 minutes plus to open. This is the same on multiple different systems, we've run the office repair with no difference and the file has been opened both locally on the systems and from a network share. We may have no choice but to recreate it.
