Word: There is not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this document

Word 2016 is throwing an error for a bunch of my old word documents "There is not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this document".

Has anyone experienced this issue before? Every single one of the documents that has had this issue with Word 2016 prints fine with word 2013 and below and there is no shortage of disk space or memory.

A tech support chat agent had me disable all COM-agents and delete temporary files, etc.. then they came to the conclusion that the file we were dealing with was corrupt which made sense at the time. But now that the issue is so widespread, I find it hard to believe that this many files are corrupt in such a way that only word 2016 wont print them.

Hi,

Regarding of the issue, please provide us more information to assist you better.

  • Which was format of the old file? DOC or DOCX.
  • Was this error pop-up when you printed these files?

Then, please try to do some test to narrow down this issue:

1) Please choose one of the file, and save it as PDF. If this error also pop-up when you print the PDF file, this issue might be caused by the Adobe Acrobat application. Please try to install the latest version of it.

2) Please log on with local admin account and run Word 2016 as administrator.

3) Install the Office 2016 latest update patches.

If this issue exists, please copy the files to another pc that installed Word 2016 to test. Or you also can send us a sample file to confirm if it is corrupted. (Email: [email protected] Please use the thread URL as subject)

I have suddenly found the same problem attempting to print a 73kb Word DOCX file to OneNote 2016.  The file is not large, obviously.  And I'm running plenty of RAM and disk space, contrary to what the alert might say.

I am having this same issue when printing a 164KB Word document (DOCX) that has some graphics in it on a newly installed Windows 7 Dell Optiplex with 8GB of RAM.  When printing, I get the error, "There is not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this document".  When trying to export to a PDF I get , "The export failed due to an unexpected error."  I have tried repairing Office 2016 and updating Adobe Reader to no avail.  This is the only computer in the office with Office 2016 installed currently but the document has been found to print and export without issue in Office 2010 and 2013 on different computers.

I can confirm our company is suffering the same problem with Word 2016. 

We have a number of Word documents that print perfectly in Word 2010 and Word 2013 but give that error when printing from Word 2016.  It is as clear as that.  We have 3 computers that have updated to 2016 that cannot print these documents and over 10 computers that are still running 2013 that can print without issue.

Needless to say we have aborted any further updates to 2016 edition of Office 365 until there is a resolution to this issue.  Let's see how fast Microsoft can resolve this issue now that it appears widespread.

Hi,

I have this exact problem with a file that have been printed 100's of times in previous versions of Word.

It is a 400kB document with nothing fancy in it, and it gives the "There is not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this document" Error everytime i try to print. It doesn't matter if i print to my HP printer with the newest driver, or i print to PDF using Microsofts driver.

I just found out that the problem lies with the 'sidebar' on the last page. If i delete that i can print the document.

Why? I don't know...

Hi George,

I have another user in the environment with the same issue.

We have followed the troubleshooting steps stated above without resolution, Office 2013 and other versions of office are able to print the document in PDF's or direct to printer completely fine

The Word document references content from another location such as a Excel sheet etc, it has a form layout with text boxes. Seems as though specific issue in regards to Word 2016. The user was a test case for environment and we do not have any other users in the domain with Office 2016.

It would appear Word 365 is having issues with text boxes or imbedded items on screen. Try saving doc as word 97-2003. This worked for me.

I had exactly the same problem with an 86kB document single page document containing a form consisting of a two column table with several small boxes "in front of text" and text boxes in front of those. The "There is not enough memory or disk space to repaginate or print this document" message is just silly. Word 2016 clearly has a problem.

Converting the document to a 193kB Word 97-2003 "Compatibility mode" allowed me to print it just fine. Microsoft needs to get its act together with this one.

Same issue described by the many posters above for a very small file with embedded chart. 

Turnerk111's solution of saving the .docx file as .doc worked for me.

Experiencing the same as well. Saving as .doc would allow me to print but the formatting was all off and unreadable.

I struck this issue recently and via a process of elimination I think I've found the cause and a workaround.

Someone had created a document for me and it contained alot of Wordart, so not images added but objects like arrows, boxes, various shapes etc.  Once I copied the Wordart over to a proper image, deleted the Wordart from the Word document, inserted the image, the document starting printing without any issues.

I hope this information is useful for someone else out there.

Did anyone find a real fix for this, or is MS addressing it???

I started rolling out 2016 on our machines at work, but stopped when this issue cropped up, was confirmed on all PCs running 2016, and the problem was non existent on the exact same document for machines running 2010 and 2013.

Can someone from MS take a look into this problem?

OK, no answer from MS, so I'm rolling all my machines back to 2013, and will recommend to everyone I know NOT to use 2016 until MS gets some major bugs worked out of it. 

If you're reading this thread and considering upgrading to Office 016, my advice is don't.

Well, I saw your advice but it's too late for me. I already upgraded to Office 2016 and got exactly the same printing error when printing a small docx file containing some charts.

I saved it as a doc file and now it can print.

Update:  I think this problem may have been fixed by Microsoft. June 18, 2016

I need to do some checking and rechecking on my problem document, but I think it has been corrected. 

I hope so, I really like Outlook 2016 and really want to use the whole Office Suite. 

Stay tuned, I'll circle back and confirm when I have done so.

1) Save the docs to older version eg, 2007-2013 / run compatibility mode. (i did this...too many document ported from the older version of MS office)

If you try to run the check for issue function you will the all the error...MS need to deal with this and rectify it.

2) 'Re-do' the documents and save to newer version. (if you got the time)

I have the exact same problem with Windows 10 and Word 2016. This is March 20, 2017 and Microsoft still has not fixed this problem. I use word art.

I will be so happy when some other company competes with MS.  Microsoft has single-handedly destroyed the US economy by causing everyone who uses their products to waste years of their life trying to find solutions to bugs in their programs. Everything costs 10% more than it should because MS gums up the works and makes working with a computer take ten times longer than it should, and driving people who use their products insane.

Do you suffer from MS fatigue and job burn-out because of MS? Someone should file a class action lawsuit against them.

What is really horrific are MS support techs who don't understand a problem and give all kinds of "solutions" that do nothing but raise the blood pressure of those they are trying to help. If you are not familiar with a problem, don't offer cockamamie solutions for it.

Hi Iam having the exact same problem with office 2016. Spent hrs lst night trying to fix it. its a new laptop and went to print one sheet off. Couldn't get it to print. Anyone any advice on sorting it. It was a small letter so wasn't a big file.

Doubt it's fixed. I have a newly updated Server 2012 R2 with updated Office 2016 and I also had to Google around for solutions i haven't found as of yet.

THIS HAS BEEN FIXED (I think as far back as Jan 2016). Had this exact issue, ran Windows Updates and did several Office updates and 20min later it was no longer a problem. Applied these updates to all our computers and been running over 4,000 computers without any issues...not sure why the blame is on Microsoft as there are bumps with anything new...

I can't post links but if you google "not enough memory to print from word" you'll see a post from answers.microsoft where Microsoft says it was fixed and to just check for updates.

No this hasn't been fixed.  I have 700 GB of Free Disk space...20 GB of memory (16 GB free), and installed a new version of Office 365 (Word 2016) on January 2, 2018 and (oh yes, ran Windows Update).  I have a large (Word 2003) document (600 MB) with lots of text boxes with pictures in them.  I get the same insufficient memory or disk space error.  Word 2016 will not handle all the text boxes with pictures in them, and so converting the document to (.doc) which it already is, is not a solution because many of the pictures at the end of the document are not there.  And converting it to a (DOCX) doesn't work either, because many of the pictures at the end of the document are not there.  There is just an outline of a small image object.

Like I said, I just installed a new Word 2016 and ran updates.  It still doesn't work.

I'm just starting to get this error.  What a pain.  Crash-crash-crash.  I started out blaming my use of MS One Drive but finding this, the issue is Word.  I hope they get around to fixing but it appears that if it has been going on this long, it is not a priority.

Still happening as of 13-03-2018

I tracked the problem to a grouped set of shapes in the footer. Ungrouped it and the error went away. Really Microsoft?

I was having the same issues.  Especially after I "upgraded" recently.  I have plenty of disk space and RAM, my trash is empty, blah, blah blah.  Then it dawned on me, I had no problem when I created these files in Word 2011.  I opened them in Word 2011 with no issues. I have the simular problems with Outlook and Excel. I haven't used the last few Excel upgrades and I am trying to figure out how to go back to the previous Outlook.   Typical Microsoft upgrades - actually a downgrades. Do these guys use their software before the release it?  A few more more of their "upgrades" and we will be using chisels on clay tablets.  I better check the "Terms of Use" agreement to see if trashing MS gets me cut off.

This happened with a lot of my documents after a recent upgrade. 

I have a crazy amount of free memory, a 32 GB paging file, emptied cache/temp files/etc., and the rest.  This shouldn't even come *close* to being an issue.  I shouldn't be within sniffing distance of running out of RAM.  Checking Task Manager, I have 95% of my memory free.

I use a lot of customized Word drawings that I have created myself.  This isn't an issue in earlier version of Word.  Wasn't a problem with 2016 until one of the latest updates.

After a lot of looking, I finally found an example of the problem.

I created A LOT of drawings, and on one of my 12 page documents, one of the smallest ones I drew was the problem (it only had a single line, an oval, and a text box).

If I ungrouped that drawing, the error went away.

If I grouped those things up again, then the error came back.

Mind you, there are 50+ other drawings in the document.  Many of them much more complex.  There are actually 2 other drawings on the same page as this problem one both of which are a group of 4 lines and 20 text boxes.  Those don't cause an issue.  The other complex ones in my document don't cause an issue.

Just this one simple one with a line, an oval, and a text box.

If I re-create the picture, the error is gone.  So something in the last update has a problem with this one specific picture.  It must be quite a minuscule bug.

Thanks it is October 19th, 2018. I'm working on rolling out new HP laptops with 1803.  This came up in testing our chapter documents which get published as a report. Footers have a horizontal bar with a group arrow arrowhead and a short straight bar as the arrow body.  Once the arrowhead construction was ungrouped on all pages...was able to print.  Thanks for the help!

PS.  Tried repair on Office...didn't fix.  Tried deleting normal.dotm and that didn't work either.

Even in 2019 the problems still occurs. User has a brand new Dell Latitude Laptop with 8 GB RAM, Word365, Windows 10 Pro. 

A simple word doc with a lot of columns and rows in it, about 75 Kb, hangs with the same error while printing.
Note: on my own computer A old Dell Latitude Laptop with 16 Gb RAM, Office2016 and windows 10 Pro it printed GOOD!.

Thought the lack of 8 GB RAM would be the answer... 

normal.dot removal and safe mode of word did not work.
Only the renaming to an old version Word97-2003 helped me out.

I still don't know why MS has no solution for it.

Hope this will save someone's problem...
