Link Shell Extension

Question

Tuesday, October 17, 2017 12:08 PM

Dear IT-professionals,

I want to link some folders to each other, therefore I found the Link Shell Extension.

http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

It uses different types of links. Can somebody tell me - in just simple explanations (i'm not a professional):

1) what the differences are in using these different options and

2) an example for what purposes you can use each option the best...?

Different options in the "Link Shell Extension" utility:

FOR FOLDERS:

  1. Symbolic Link
  2. Junction
  3. Smart Copy
  4. Smart Mirror
  5. DeLorean Copy
  6. Hardlink Clone

FOR FILES:

  1. Hardlink
  2. Symbolic Link

When you're a pro, you probably know what I am talking about. If you need some more information on the utility, feel free to examine the website I provided. There is a lot of information on it... But I do not get it... :-/

Hope somebody can give me some clarifying information so I can understand.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi,

Because the Link Shell Extension is a third party software, you’d better check the website of this software to get help.

The extension allows the user to select one or many files or folders, then using the mouse, complete the creation of the required Links - Hardlinks, Junctions or Symbolic Links or in the case of folders to create Clones consisting of Hard or Symbolic Links.

Based on my check, Hardlink Clone creates a symbolic link to a file. Junction creates a symbolic link to an entire folder. Smart Copy basically creates a copy of the entire directory structure from the source location to the destination.

Some information you could find in the link below.

Hope it will be helpful to you

An old thread, I know.  But at least it's one I can respond to.  My take on this thread is:

1. user comes here trying to get an answer

2. moderator sends him away

3. moderator takes credit for not giving answer

You don't know how much time I have spent trying to get a definition of the various hard link flavors offered in LSE.

I won't even bother asking here.
