Add a new key to KMS host

Question

Thursday, February 1, 2018 11:35 AM | 1 vote

Hi all,

As I didn't find simple and clear answer elsewhere, I ask my question here.

I have a KMS host on Windows Server 2012 R2. This host already have 2 KMS keys : one for Windows Server 2012 R2 and one for Office 2016.

Is it possible to add a new key for Windows Server 2016 and keep the other keys on this KMS host ?

Thank you.

Regards,

FXE

Hi,

>>So is it possible to add KMS key for Windows Server 2016 without replace Windows Server 2012 R2 KMS key ?

You need the kms host key "Windows Srv 2016 DataCtr / Std KMS" for a new windows server 2016.You also could remain Windows Server 2012 R2 KMS server.Windows Server 2016 kms for WIN 10 ,Windows Server 2012 R2 for win 8 win 7.You could point clients to the specific kms server.

>>So does it means that I just have to put my Windows Server 2016 KMS key and my KMS server will be able to issue KMS licences for both 2012 R2 and 2016 servers ?

Yes

>>And finally, is my Windows Server 2012 R2 capable to issue Windows Server 2016 KMS licenses ?

Yes, if you update your Windows Server 2012R2 to the latest version.

Thank you for your reply Imran,

So I just have to run slmgr.vbs /ipk WServer2016KMSkey and slmgr.vbs /ato ? It will not replace the existing KMS key for Windows server 2012 R2 ?

Hi and thank you for your answers, and sorry for the delay...

I think there is a misunderstood, so I explain my environment again :

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server with KMS role.

This server currently issues licenses for other Windows Server 2012 R2 and Office 2016 clients.

Now, I want this server to issue licenses for Windows Server 2016 servers.

So is it possible to add KMS key for Windows Server 2016 without replace Windows Server 2012 R2 KMS key ?

As I read on your link,

Windows KMShost features are "cumulative down-version"

So does it means that I just have to put my Windows Server 2016 KMS key and my KMS server will be able to issue KMS licences for both 2012 R2 and 2016 servers ?

And finally, is my Windows Server 2012 R2 capable to issue Windows Server 2016 KMS licenses ?

Thank you again.

Regards,

FXE

Hi Frank and thank you for your and answer, and sorry again for the delay...

Your answers is helpful for my issue. Thank you. After installing the requested KB on my 2012 R2 KMS host, I was able to add Server 2016 CLVSK, and my KMS host can now issue KMS licenses.

Thank you again.
