Credentials supplied are not sufficient to access this printer

Question

I have a Windows 10 PC with USB attached printers. The administrator ID on this PC is a local ID and does not have a password. The printers are shared by PCs on my home network which contains both Linux and Windows 10 PCs. There is no file sharing on the home network. Only local IDs are used on the Windows 10 PCs.  None of the other PCs on the home network have attached printers. Until today, all the Linux and Windows 10 PCs could print to the printers. The print dialogs in both Windows 10 and Linux when submitting print jobs do not ask for userid and password for each print job, the userid/null password I supplied when setting up the printers on each PC are sufficient.

Yesterday my wife printed from her Windows 10 laptop just fine. Today, 13 February, after my wife powered up her laptop, and tried to print, it said that the printer she wanted to print to was not accessible. I deleted the printer on her laptop, and tried to Add a printer. The Add a printer dialog successfully identifies the PC with the printers attached to it. However I cannot complete the Add a printer dialog as after specifying the userid and null password, I get a message "The credentials supplied are not sufficient to access the printer. Do you want to specify new credentials". As I have no other credentials, I have to Cancel out of the Add a printer dialog. The last Windows Update to my wife's laptop was on 25 January, the last Windows Update to the Printer PC was 26 January, so there's no Windows Update to blame.

What is odd is that *today* all the other Windows 10 PCs on the home network, and my Linux PCs, can still successfully print to the printers.

How do I get the 'credentials' problem on my wife's laptop to go away ?

I restored to a 10 day old Restore Point on my wife's laptop and it can now print OK again. We have been having some very hot days, and the day before yesterday the laptop shut down due to overheating. We now think she had in fact not actually printed since that shutdown, that is she didn't in fact print anything yesterday.

Anyway it seems that something, somewhere, got corrupted and the 10 day old Restore Point fixed that. Wish I'd thought to do a Restore before I posted this thread ! But, if anyone else has a 'credentials' problem that suddenly appears, it may be worth trying a restore to a known good state.

The PC with printers attached runs Windows 10 Home. As best I can tell, Group Policy Editor is only for Windows 10 Professional.
