Question
Thursday, January 3, 2013 4:25 PM
I have a colleague who recently had to change her password. After she did this she tried to log into SharePoint and was unable to do so. Restarting her computer or logging out/in did not seem to help this issue, and she was repeatedly locked out of her machine, and had to be unlocked by IT. Sometimes, after being unlocked, she can get back into SharePoint, but this seems to be erratic as she'll log out and log back in and not be able to access SharePoint again. Using my login from her machine I was able to access SharePoint without any issues.
Has anyone seen this issue before? Is this a SharePoint problem or Active Directory? Could it be a bad setting in the Group Policy? The IT department does not know much about SharePoint and I am honestly mystified by some of the vagaries of Active Directory.
Thanks,
- Matt

Make sure that the user did not store her password in the browser. If so, clear stored password and try again.

Hi Olson,
Not exactly the same, but one such similar scenario. We used to have a synchronization service that runs on our desktop which sync the credentials timely. In my case, i have to flush the cache of that service forcefully and then rerun sync credentials options to get the new credentials synchronizied.
Hence please check if any such service is running on the users desktop.
Best Regards, Paramesh.

In SharePoint we generally do not have to enter our credentials when we log in because it automatically gets the AD credentials of the user logged into Windows. However, I did have her delete her stored passwords "just in case"

Paramesh,
Thanks for the hint, however we do not have such a service here. According to IT it "connects to the domain controller each time", whatever that means.

She has her old password saved.
- From Internet Explorer
- Go to Tools
- Click on Internet Options
- Click on Delete
- Make sure 'Passwords' is checked off
- Click Delete again
- Restart Internet Explorer and browse to the SharePoint site
It's likely that the sharepoint site isn't added to Trusted Sites in which case she will be prompted to enter her username and password. Your company IT can help her get that set up.

Maarten,
Thank you but if you read above you'll see we already did the stored-password-deletion technique. I suppose if she never has the problem again then we can safely say this was the problem, but if you also recall the problem has been intermittent, so you would think an incorrect stored password would always cause problems.
I can see how trusted sites could be an issue, in some cases, but our trusted sites are managed by group policy and it is an Intranet site, anyway, so I would think it would, for the most part, automatically be trusted.

Hi Matt,
Please reset IE browser to default settings for testing, and also test other browsers on her machine.
Please test her account to logon SharePoint site on other machine, check if the issue is related to her machine.
Please also check her machine Event Viewer and SharePoint Server ULS log if there are some related error messages.
Thanks

Even though it's managed by group policy I've seen trusted sites run in to issues before. You can also check 'Reset all zones to default level' in Internet Options to have all security options reset to group policy. Theirs some cases where user settings can append/override (with more intrusive options, never less) group policy security with IE. Which is obnoxious but is done for a good reason.

The problem seems to be resolved since last week when we had her delete the passwords. I am not entirely sure if that is the culprit but we didn't specifically do anything else, so that is the answer I'm marking. If it pops back up and we can't resolve it by password deletion I'll come back. Thanks for all the helpful tips!
