I get error code: 0x800F0922 when trying to turn on "microsoft print to PDF" feature in Windows 10 features. The issue is Microsoft Print to PDF is no longer listed in Devices and Printers and Device Manager. And so far attempts to add it back resulted in the error message "Unable to install printer. The Handle is invalid" or "Printer driver was not installed. Element not found". Windows Update Troubleshooter didn't help.
Read my previous #posts# below from beginning to understand the various steps I have tried. The error message is no help to me - I don't understand what it means and cannot take any corrective action.
I have tried the following suggestions but none works.
- Tried both DeviceCenterDiagnostic.diagcab and Printerdiagnostic10.diagcab
- Tried Andre Da Costa's article on how to add or reinstall the Microsoft PDF Printer
- Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
- I have also tried to use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image.
The issue was originally posted on Microsoft community but no one can help to fix the issue. I hope someone in Technet forum can help.

To add, I encountered the same problem with Microsoft XPS Document Writer. I first noticed the problem when I attempted to send an email from Quickbooks, which generates an XPS file first. It reported XPS components missing. I checked my printer list and XPS Document Writer was no longer listed. Tried to install it, but got the same error messages as Glevic. (Which error was only a matter of how I tried to install -- using the existing driver, or trying to install one using the Microsoft XPS Document Writer v4 selection.)
At one point it was suggested I turn off XPS Service in Windows Features, reboot, and then turn it back on. However, attempts to turn it back on generated a 0X800F0922 error code message.
Bottom line, Microsoft XPS Document Writer disappeared on its own. I did not initially uninstall it. It simply disappeared. It will not reinstall. Nor can I manually uninstall the printer because Windows 10 does not think it is there. There is no information on how to manually (through file deletions and registry changes) completely eliminate the printer so that a "fresh" install could be attempted.
Finally, this problem is wider spread than thought. A casual search on the internet bears that out. But, no one has a successful solution short of reinstalling Windows 10, which is hardly a solution. This issue has been kicked around in the Microsoft Community forum for over a month. The Microsoft moderators gave advice that bore no success and recommended the discussion be continued in the TechNet forum for higher tech support. Hopefully we can find some relief here.

Hi ,
I haved searched online and found some similar cases. Almost every user fixed this issue via reinstall Windows. So, try to perform an in-place upgrade repair to refresh the machine. It is NOT a Clean install. Refreshing the machine won`t affect the personal files. It allows you to keep all your files, settings and apps. No product key is required. Activation is automatic. Boot from a Windows 10 ISO, choose "Upgrade" install.
Best regards

The refresh does not allow you to keep your installed apps that were downloaded or installed using a DVD/CD. Here is the warning:
Warning
Apps you installed from websites and DVDs will be removed. Apps that came with your PC and apps you installed from the Windows Store will be reinstalled. Windows puts a list of removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC.
That's the problem with a refresh. I have dozens of programs I have managed to get to run under Windows 10. Some require tinkering. Some are not even guaranteed to run under Windows 10, but were successfully retained under Windows 8 and through upgrades to 10. I have no guarantee they will install under Windows 10. And the time to do that could involve days. Going through all this mess for just a simple problem is an unreasonable solution. Microsoft engineers must know how to fix such a simple problem as making sure one of their printers is completely eliminated so that it can be successfully reinstalled. This issue needs to be elevated higher up the Tech Support chain.

Hi,
I had same problem,
I couldn't add print to pdf from turn on windows features,
also couldn't add printer through add printer steps,
and I also was missing folder in C:\Windows\System32\spool\tools.
I managed to fix that after stoping spooler service before installing.
Hope this helps.
Dalibor.

Hi Dalibor,
I tried your method and the same error message "Unable to install printer. The Handle is invalid".
The issue is still not resolved. I am reluctant to go down the Window 10 refresh path yet.

Still waiting to hear from a higher level of Microsoft tech support for a better answer than reinstalling Windows. There has got to be a better answer from the company that developed Windows!!!!

Hi ,
Clear your CBS.logļ¼ then repeat again. Check if there is any related error message recorded in CBS.log. If so, share it with us. It is in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
Best regards

By clear, I assume you meant to remove the CBS.log. I moved all the files to a temporary directory (no files in CBS) and rebooted. I confirmed the directory was still empty after reboot. I opened up QuickBooks and recreated the error for an email receipt that required Microsoft XPS Document Writer (missing component). I confirmed printer still missing from my list of printers. I checked to see if there was a CBS log. There was not. Next, I tried to install the missing XPS printer. It failed as previously described. I checked the CBS folder and a 578KB CBS log was generated. There are over 3,000 lines of text in the log and I don't see a way to attach a file to this forum message. Most of the lines are pairs of "Read out cached applicability" followed by "WU creates the package". Below I have pasted what seems to be the germane part. The line space is where the 3,000 lines of "Read" and "WU" were. If you need more, ask, or tell me how to attach the file.

Hi ,
This issue could have occurred if Windows update components are either corrupt or missing.
Please follow the steps provided in the article below and see if it helps:
How do I reset Windows Update components?

I carefully went through the reset. On step 2 the "net stop appidsvc" reported the "Application Identity service is not started". The others were successful.
On step 6, on reregister files, I got one of four reports.
Reported as successful:
atl, urlmon, jscript, vbscript, scrrun, msxml3, msxml6, softpub, wintrust, dssenh, rsaenh, cryptdlg, ole32, shell32, wuapi.
Reported as loaded but entry-point DllReguisterServer was not found:
mshtml, wuaueng, qmgr.
Reported as loaded, but call to DllRegisterServor failed with error code 0x80070005:
actprxy, oleaut32, wups, wups2.
Reported as failed to load... module could not be found:
msxml, gpkcsp, sccbase, slbcsp, initpki, wuaueng1, wucltui, wuweb, qmprprxy, wucltux, muweb, wuwebv.
On step 9, restarting services, two restarted, two (wuauserv, cryptsvc) reported "already been started".
Step 11 Windows 10 does not seem to have an Update Agent. Microsoft only mentions Window 8.1. I did run the update service and updates were installed.
After computer restarted, I checked for the Microsoft XPS Document Writer and it was not installed. I tried to install it with the identical failures as has already been reported. So, this suggestion was a bust.

And still waiting for a response. My problem is not unusual. The net is full of similar issues with Microsoft virtual printers disappearing, then being impossible to reinstall. If the problem can't be solved here, where do I go for the next higher level of tech support?
Tuesday, July 11, 2017 1:38 AM
Can this problem be bumped up to higher tech support? There does not appear to be a solution here. No one has responded in the last three weeks.

Is there a reason no moderator has responded to this thread or referred this to a higher level of technical support?

Continuing this one-person saga (since there seems to be no moderators), I just allowed the very latest Windows 10 update. Tried to install the missing Microsoft XPS Document Writer once again, but Microsoft no longer lists the XPS Document Writer in its list of printers. Not sure this is a proper solution to the problem! There was a Microsoft XPS Class Driver listed which I did install. Unfortunately, it did not help my problem with QuickBooks, which requires XPS Document Writer to create PDF files. It still reports a component is missing.
Thursday, August 17, 2017 11:21 PM
Continuing the one-person saga, on a QuickBooks' website I found the following page:
https://community.intuit.com/articles/1502297-create-print-or-email-pdf-files-pdf-tool
On that page was a link to a ** QuickBooks Print and PDF Repair Tool** which allowed download of an exe file named QuickBooksDesktopPDFTool. I ran this program. It opened a DOS window and did a bunch of things to quickly to record, but I saw it stop the print spooler and clear some files and finished by installing the XPS Document Writer. I was dubious, but when I checked my printers, there it was installed! And QuickBooks is once again able to send emails using XPS to create PDF files. So, I don't know what it did, but fixed my problem.
Tuesday, April 17, 2018 4:14 PM
XPS Writer continues to disappear and I have to rerun the QuickBooks Print and PDF Repair Tool. That has been successful until the latest disappearance. The tool reports many problems and unable to local files, runs a bat at the end, then the CMD window disappears without installing the XPS printer, nor can I install it manually. So, I am back to square one without the tool working anymore.

Still cannot install MS Print To Pdf. (Windows10). Cannot print/safe as pdf from QuickBooks.

Call Quickbooks. I had this problem too. Been bugging me for two days. Tried all the fixes.
The tech at quickbooks corrected it. Took about an hour but I'm running once again.
