Multiple DHCP scopes with seperate NIC's

Question

Wednesday, February 20, 2013 8:55 AM

Hi,

Are there any known issues with using DHCP server (Windows Server 2008 R2) with two NIC's to serve clients from different network ranges? I know I could use IP Helper on a router (which I do for remote sites), but I would like to do without one on the local network. Additionally, the previous (Novell) DHCP server was setup this way.

Server NIC's

-NIC1: 192.168.1.1/24 with Gateway 192.168.1.254

-NIC2: 10.10.1.1/24 with Gateway 10.10.1.254

Scopes:

- 192.168.1.10-100/24

- 192.168.2.10-100/24 (remote site using IP helper)

- 10.10.1.10-100/24

Thanks for your help.

Hi Lakend,

Firstly, please feel free to run a multihomed DHCP Server. I do also have a multihomed DHCP Server in my lab, and it works properly.

And, FYI

Design Option 4: Multihomed DHCP Servers

Multihomed DHCP server does not allocate IP addresses

A Windows Server 2008-based multi-homed DHCP server is not authorized in the DHCP MMC snap-in even though you authorized the DHCP server by using Server Manager

However, I notice that you have multiple default gateway configured. To avoid issues, please make sure that you have set correct metric for the two interfaces.

There is no problem running a multi-homed DHCP server.  You have to make sure that the DHCP service is bound to the multiple NICs.  You do this from the DHCP Admin console.  One downside to this is that you are limited to the number of NICs you can install on the server.
