Remove "check online for updates from Microsoft Update" without stopping usage of the windows store

Question

Dear,

Within our organization, we would like to force usage of wsus to check for update, by removing the "check online for updates from Microsoft Update" in the windows update settings tab.

This can be done with the GPO setting "Do not connect to any Windows Update Internet Locations" setting it's value enabled. However, a side affect of this one, is that the Windows Store will than also stop working (and possible other microsoft online services).

Is there any way we can force remove the setting "check online for updates from Microsoft Update" but do not stop functions such as the Windows Store to stop working?

Best,

Steven

Hi Steven,

No.

To my knowledge, there is no way to force remove the setting "check online for updates from Microsoft Update" but doesn’t influence the function of Window Store.

When we enable the GPO: Do not connect to any Windows Update Internet locations, it does affects Windows Store, its description also tell us this point: Enabling this policy will disable that functionality, and may cause connection to public services such as the Windows Store to stop working.

Personally, I usually follow this guide to configure clients, it’s important to Specify intranet Microsoft update service location for clients.

Step 5: Update and Configure the Client Computers

I believe "Turn off access to all Windows Update features" would do the the trick.

This Group Policy setting will prevent the "Check online for updates from Microsoft update" from appearing but will not block Windows Store or Defender definitions from MU.

Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update > Remove access to use all Windows Update features

It will grey out the "Check for Updates" button. Note that this prevents the "Check online for updates from Microsoft update" from showing up. If the user has selected the "Check for updates" button previously the link remains. I haven't figured out how to remove it once the damage has been done. Maybe it will go away I just figured this out 10 minutes ago.

tomcomtech - did you ever figure this out?

We have systems running Windows 10 1607 and it appears that the "Check online for updates from Microsoft update" link is still present even after enabling the Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update > Remove access to use all Windows Update features policy.

It seems like the policy works on my 1709 test system but not on 1607.  We have a local WSUS setup with dual scan enabled.  We don't want users being able to get updates especially feature updates by clicking the check online link.
