SharePoint Lists in Document Libraries

Question

Is it possible to create a SharePoint list in a folder in a Document Library?   We have a Document Library for Projects in a site with many other Document Libraries, Lists, etc.    Within the Project library is a folder, call it Project-1.   We are collecting a lot of files in that folder, we would also like to create lists that will be unique to Project-1.   We DO NOT want these lists under Lists in the main site, we want persons working on specific projects to go into these lists as part of working on the project, within the specific project folder in the Projects library.    There are way too many projects to consider using sub-sites for each project.   Is there a way to do this?    Thanks!

PS: If you can't do this is there a way to create the lists in the normal List area, hide the list so it doesn't appear on the main site, and put a link to the list in the folder in the document library?   It's clumsy, but might be an alternative.

There is not a way to put a list inside of another list (in this case document library (which is a special type of list)) -

What you can do is create the list, in the list settings (Title Description and navigation), check the "No" radio button for "Display on QuickLaunch" this will prevent it from being seen on the left hand menu, but when people go to "View All Site Content" or click on the "Lists" heading, it will still show up in the page that shows the lists on the site.  Otherwise, maybe create a subsite for the project, and include a Link to the list on the sub site, if you add the content type "Link to Document" to your Library, you can add a link, just like it were a document ....

Thank you for the quick response.   That is what I thought, but it is very helpful to know for sure.   I'll do as you recommend, hiding the list and placing a link in the project folder.   That document library is already enabled for links.   Thanks.
