I have followed the directions here support.microsoft. com/kb/316951 and every time I attempt to open up the file in Word 2010 it tells me: "Microsoft Word cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type." I am curious as to how to follow the steps in the KB article if they don't work. This is on more than one .asd file.

Please read carefully what it says for Word 2010 on the kb/316951 page... .asd files were used in Word 2007, for Word 2010: And I quote: Word 2010
On the File menu, click Recent.
Click Recover Unsaved Documents.
So I can only conclude that .asd files are NOT handled by Word 2010.
I think in this case you should use.docx recovery tool Recovery Toolbox. Maybe something happens to restore. http://www.oemailrecovery.com/word_repair.html

Hi,
Do you mean you are unable to open the .asd file in Word 2010 with error "Microsoft Word cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type"?
Please back up these .asd file at first, then try to right-click the .asd file in File Explorer, click Open With, select Word 2010. Confirm if the file can be opened.
If it still doesn't work, click File > Open, select this file and click Open and Repair in Word 2010 to open it.

Winnie Liang
