Can Windows 10 Storage Spaces be moved to another computer?

Question

Saturday, March 30, 2019 2:51 PM

I have a 2 way mirror storage space on 2 USB external drives set up in Windows 10 home that I want to move to a new computer also running Windows 10 home.

I've read that you just have to connect the 2 USB external drives to the new computer (i.e. the storage space information is stored on the physical drives) but I tried this and the new computer does not recognize the drives at all.

I've also read that you would have to back up all of the data first and create a new storage pool on the new computer with two new drives and then copy over the backed up files. If this is really the case, then the data on storage space drives is basically lost in the event of a motherboard failure whereas a non-storage space drive containing files could be just connected to the new computer.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in our forum!

First, we can move storage space to new machines, but the catch is that Windows needs to know how to talk to the drives. If you're connecting this to a standard SATA or IDE bus on your motherboard, then you should have no issue. However, if your disks are connected by something more fancy, like an external disk housing, or through an eSATA or SATA multiplier, SAS, SATA card, etc., then you may have a device driver issue accessing the disk before loading the Storage Space.

So, our general approach is to back up all the data first, then create a new storage space on the new machine, and finally copy the data to the new storage space, as you said.

As for how Windows communicates with drives, it's a low-level behavior that we can't know, so in your case, I think we only have one of the above methods available.

This applies exactly to my situation. I am having issues getting my spaces drives back.

I did a fresh install, but i disconnected my spaces drives first. -  all are connected through an external powered usb strip, (1st possible problem). Other side of that are:

2 drives connected independently with external hd sata to usb connector.

4 connected through a multi hd bay (4) which pc sees as a single use unit

2 connected similarly w/ powered 2 port sata to usb unit

8 sata drives total.

I reinstalled win10, as far as i know both versions we're the same (as far as windows updates). Now i can't get spaces to see all the drives, it sees 6 out of 8. The same two never show, after connectecting each drive (waiting for it to show before connecting the next) separately. I have not done anything to the spaces drives (except move them around port to port ).

What to do?

I assume 1st the drives need to be in their original configuration. Specifically the multi usb housing- do the drives have to be in the exact slots in the housing, or is it good enough to have the exact same four drives in the housing no matter the order?
