Question

Heyy Guyss!!!

I hope you're doing great.

I hope this is an ordinary problem i'm sharing today because i've seen so many posts on this topic but none of them seem to be helping me so i've decided to ask the same problem (may be in a different way) to you geniuses for some simple solution.

I'm running Windows 10 on my laptop and outlook version is "Microsoft Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.4266.1001) 64-bit"

Before i was using Outlook 2013 and every thing was so great until i upgraded to Outlook 2016 version due to some Windows upgrade curiosity.

in the newer version i'm unable to MARK AS COMPLETE my email messages and also can't create color categories.

I would hihgly appreciate any simple suggestion/solution in this regards.

Many thanks.

Cheers!!!

Hi Fai7al,

>> in the newer version i'm unable to MARK AS COMPLETE my email messages and also can't create color categories.

By “unable to”, do you mean the two options are not available or they are just grayed out?

First, please have a check at the account setting to see what your account type is. The Full Flagging and categories support require a POP3 or Exchange account.

Second, according to my research, you may need to "Upgrade" your data file to use categories. To do this, please right click your email account and then go to Data File Properties. Under General tab, you can find the "Upgrade to Color Categories.." button:

Third, the issue might also be caused by a corrupted data file. If the issue persists, please try repairing your data file. For .pst file, you can use the SCANPST.EXE tool. For .ost file, you may safely delete the file  and Outlook will recreate the file the next time the program opens. Refer to this link about how to repair Outlook data file: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-Outlook-Data-Files-pst-and-ost-25663bc3-11ec-4412-86c4-60458afc5253

By the way, it is also suggested to check for and install all the available updates for Office 2016 and see if there will be any improvement.

Hope this helps.

Perry Pan

Dear Perry,

Bundle of thanks for your kind reply and support. I tried to follow the procedure as mentioned above several times but I believe there was something wrong with my outlook version and the required categories were not appearing over there. I went to my IT Administrator and they changed the IMAP to Exchange (took less than two minutes) and everything is so great afterward.

Once again many thanks for your support and hope the above help the other people.

Regards,

Fai7al
