Get an " N is not a valid character" for Product Key

Question

Monday, January 14, 2013 7:40 PM | 1 vote

Installing Office 2013 Pro Plus with a product key validated by technet support. The client is Windows 8 basic x64.

One of the characters in that key is an "N"

When that character is entered, the install throws up an error saying " N is not a valid character"

Is there a fix for this?

Have you got in touch with the TechNet Support?

Yes. They suggested trying here or contacting the Product Activation Center.

Although written for Office2010, the same rules should apply;
from: http://support.microsoft.com/common/survey.aspx?scid=sw;en;1844&showpage=1

When you read the product key from the label, certain characters may be mistaken for other characters. Here is a list of the most common mistaken characters:

  • The letter B and the number eight (8)
  • The letter Q and number zero (0)
  • The letter G and the number six (6)
  • The letters VV and the letter W

Additionally, a Microsoft Office 2010 product key does not contain any of the following characters:

  • Numbers (0, 1 and 5)
  • Letters (A, E, I, L, N, O, S, U, and Z)

I got this error and discovered that I was trying to enter an Office 2013 product key into a dialogue box labelled 'Microsoft Office 2010'. Perhaps you have the same problem?
