Forgot Azure VM user name

Question

Monday, June 3, 2019 5:22 PM

Hi,

I created a Azure VM of Windows Server 2016 about 3-4 days ago.

Now I am trying to connect it using RDP.

I am not sure what user name I selected while creating the VM.

Pls let me know, how to find the user name?

Regards

There is no location in the portal where you can find your local administrator.

Although you can create a new administrator account in the portal to log into the VM and then be able to find the original administrator account.

First you need to log into the Azure portal and then go to the virtual machine you need the local administrator.

Then find the **Reset Password **blade and click on it.

Enter a new user name and password and then hit Update.

Once this takes place you can attempt to RDP into the virtual machine again and locate the original admin account under computer management.

I have seen this step.

AD role is installed on Windows Server 2016. And DC is promoted.

That's why I was confused while creating new user name.

Apologies on delay on this. Is there any update, are you still seeing this issue?

Azure Team must update this article...

It actually Creates new user (Admin).

It does not reset password for existing local Admin.I tried and 100% sure that you can follow the steps to create new admin.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/troubleshooting/reset-rdp?toc=%2Fazure%2Fvirtual-machines%2Fwindows%2Ftoc.json

Cheers!
