unable to add operating system upgrade package - get error "The specified path does not contain a valid operating system or you do not have permission to access it. Specify a valid path.

Question

Trying to get Windows 10 1803 added to operating system image and upgrade package but receiving an error when I get to part to add to the upgrade package.

SCCM is running version 1802 plus hotfix kb 4339794 & kb 4163547.

ADK was upgraded; boot image shows updated OS 10.0.17134.1.  I was able to add the operating system wim file without error but when I attempt to point to setup.exe for the operating system upgrade package I get the error.  The operating system was distributed to the DP and shows green.  What am I missing?

iso file downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

log file shows:

Description = "Failed to get the image property from the source WIM file due to error 80070002";
ErrorCode = 2147942402;
File = "..\sspimagepackage.cpp";
Line = 593;
Operation = "ExecMethod";
ParameterInfo = "SMS_OperatingSystemInstallPackage";
ProviderName = "WinMgmt";
StatusCode = 2147749889;

If I click on the OS properties i imported, wrong version is showing.  shows Windows PE.  How do I get the correct ISO that will have Windows 10 Pro as an option??

Thank you,

Melissa

> "SCCM is running version 1802"

Note that there are forums dedicated to CB at https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=ConfigMgrCBOSD

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 doesn't contain a way to download the media directly, only a tool to create the media and I'm not sure if the media created from the download tool is suitable; you should download the media from your Microsoft Volume License Center.

When trying to create the upgrade media, what exactly are you specifying as the path though? An OS upgrade package is not created from an ISO directly, it is created from the full contents of the Windows 10 media. Thus, if you are starting with an ISO, you need to extract all of its contents and then point the wizard to the folder containing this extracted content.

> "If I click on the OS properties i imported, wrong version is showing.  shows Windows PE."

I don't understand this statement though? First, you say there was an error, then you say you are looking at the package imported? Which is it?

I am able to add the operating system to sccm.  I get the error when i attempt to add the operating system to the operating system upgrade package.  It says The specified path does not contain a valid operating system... so I checked the properties of the operating system (under operating system images) and under images, it shows two options 1. Microsoft Windows PE 2. Microsoft Windows Setup - not PRO. I have tried both and both still fail when attempted to load to the upgrade package.

It would make sense that I am downloading from wrong area. I will check with IT director to get it downloaded from license site to see if that resolves it. thank you

Hi melissa12345,

Please unzip the .iso then point the wizard to the extracted files. That is the "operating system upgrade package" that sccm is looking for.

Hope it helpful.

Best regards,
Rambo

" Error : Specified path does not contain a valid operating system or you do not have permission to access it."

I have downloaded windows 10 .ISO from Microsoft & extracted into folder. Even, I can access other files from same path.

You must have read permissions to the UNC location specified as well as the computer account for the system hosting the SMS Provider (usually your primary site server).

Melissa -I was facing the same issue...to resolve this you need to download the ISO file from licensing.microsoft.com

Download from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 will not work

Please be aware that even if the ISO file from licensing.microsoft.com is working we are now facing that SCCM Client on the destination computer after the upgrade is not working at all...we can't Remote Control and so on, and since that the SCCM client is not working we can't have a status on the Deployment itself...-_-
