Uninstalling Visual Studio 2010

Tried uninstalling VS2010 manually from Win7/64-bit.  9 componenets left, and except for first, not sure if they were from 2010, maybe some from one of Service Packs.  Please verify what needs to be deleted:

VS2010 Tools for Office Runtime (x64)       This wants only to install.  What to do, install then uninstall?

.NET framework 4 client profile

.NET framework 4 extended

Help Viewer 1.1

Silverlight 4 SDK

Silverlight

msxml 4 sp2

wcf RIA server v1.0 sp1

web developer tool

Also, What is best way to uninstall any of the Visual Studios and service packs?  Thanks much for help.

Thanks for your post!

 You can perform a manual uninstall by removing Visual Studio 2010 and then removing related components.

To manually uninstall Visual Studio

  1. In the Control Panel, open the utility for uninstalling a program, for example, in Windows 7, open Uninstall a program.

  2. Remove all instances of Visual Studio 2010 products.

  3. Uninstall any supporting products, in the following order. In non-English installations, you must also remove language packs for some of the listed products. You do not have to reboot until after you have removed the last package on the list.

    1. Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 ADO.NET Entity Framework Tools

    2. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Transact-SQL Language Service

    3. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data-Tier Application Project

    4. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data-Tier Application Framework

    5. Microsoft Sync Framework SDK v1.0 SP1

    6. Microsoft Sync Framework Services v1.0 SP1

    7. Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime v1.0 SP1

    8. Microsoft Silverlight 3 SDK

    9. Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2

    10. Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2 - Visual Studio 2010 Tools

You can also uninstall Visual Studio by using the uninstall utility.

You can download and run the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Uninstall Utility. By default, this removes Visual Studio and supporting components, but does not remove components that are shared with other applications on the computer. To also remove shared components, run the uninstall utility with the /full switch. To also remove the .NET Framework 4, use the netfx switch.

Hi CM007,

Since you need to use VS 2005, you should use Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Uninstall Utility in default mode:

Default (VS2010_Uninstall-RTM.ENU.exe)
Uninstalls all top level products of 2010 release and its supporting components. This mode does not remove Visual Studio components shared with previous product releases (e.g. Visual Studio 2008) or system level updates such as Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.

For your first question, you can refer to a KB article which describes Visual Studio 2010 SP1, including the issues that are fixed and the technology improvements that are added in Visual Studio 2010 SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983509

For the second question, in the Control Panel->Programs->Programs and Features, right click .NET framework 4 client profile and click Uninstall/Change.

For the third question, Based on my understanding, the best way to uninstall VS 2010 is to use Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Uninstall Utility, to uninstall VS 2010 SP1, you can refer to http://msmvps.com/blogs/carlosq/archive/2011/04/12/uninstalling-visual-studio-2010-sp1.aspx

Hi Cathy,

Your reply is much appreciated!  I tried using the MS VS2010 Removal Utility using the default config (no switch), but nothing else was deleted from my list above.  I had already seen and followed the same instructions that you provided above also for a manual uninstall first before I found out about the Utility.  So, at this point, I'm left with the components that I listed above.  They might have come from VS2010 SP1, but in any case I'm trying to find out if they did come from the VS2010 installation in some way.  Have seen some horror stories on-line re people trying to remove VS2010 as well as SP1.  I'm hesitant to delete the listing because I don't know if something else, like in Win7/64-bit, needs them.  I can't delete the first one listed. 

The reason for uninstalling VS2010 is that we need to install the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 180-day Eval. kit which contains WinCE6.0 R3, Platform Builder 2005, and VS2005. This is for a development board with a specific microprocessor on it.  Have to get rid of 2010 since can't have 2010 and 2005 installed on same hard drive.

1) Is there any way that you could verify that the components that I listed above came from VS2010 or VS2010/SP1 so I can delete them?  How can I find out?

2) How can I get rid of the first component?

3) What's the best/safest way to remove the components that are from VS2010 &/or SP1?

It's 3:44 A.M. on a Thursday Morning. I have been struggling off and on since this past Sunday with Visual Studio 2010. In a nutshell, this is, by far, the worst release of Visual Studio I have ever seen.

I am following Cathy's list of manual uninstall steps. I am afraid to use the Uninstall Utility because other people on the Internet said that it fails and sometimes leaves HUGE amounts of cruft in the registry. So I am doing it manually. VS2010 was so buggy, I finally decided to revert to VS2008, but my VS2008 is now broken. The VS2008 IDE complains that my debug builds do not contain debug information when i am certain that they do.

Please, please, do not be polite to me. Please do not tell me to report VS2008 to Microsoft Connect. Please do not point me to "helpful" link to solve my VS2008 problem. Please do not regurgitate some bombastic babble about being committed to VS2010. Please do not thank me. Please do not use passive phrases like, "While it is regrettable..."

You will only insult me further.

I am disgusted.

If you really cared about us as customers while developing VS2010, this thread simply would not exist. You would realize how much we hate staying up until 5:00 A.M. fixing crap that never should have existed in the first place. You put out Release Notes and have Community Forums of all kinds to satiate the collective anger of your customers, but the fact is that you KNEW when you released VS2010 that it was buggy, but you released it anyway because management wanted the revenue.

If you really, really, care about how I feel, as a customer, then there is something that you can do for me: Tell me, "Yes, you're right, this is a pretty crappy version of Visual Studio compared to the previous versions, we are aware of it, and we are sorry for releasing it in its current state." And please, no euphemisms. Just acknowledge the truth - that the incompetence of the Visual Studio 2010 team is the reason that 1000's and 1000's of senior engineers around the world are wasting time doing things that they have absolutely no business doing for a product as expensive as VS2010.

THAT, and THAT alone will prove to me that you understand me as a customer.

Best way is to run Setup file and choose Uninstall. That's it done.
