Open in Explorer error 'Windows can't access this disc'

Question

This is an interesting one. The user has always got the same permissions to the library. The site has two libraries, and the user has got each mapped to a network drive. She's got the same access to these library, but one stopped working since a few days ago. Her colleague with the same access, can open the mapped drive with no issue.

The error message she's getting is:

\sites\library is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

I asked the user to go to the library, and try to Open in Explorer, and she's getting another error message:

Windows can't access this disc

The disc might be corrupt. Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it.

I also tried to create folder in the library, and asked the user to go to the folder and do Open in Explorer from the folder level, and it worked for her. But when she tried to click one level up, back to the library, she's getting the same error message as above.

Any idea? Thank you.

Hi Jessie,

As this issue only occurs for a user, you can remove the user from the problematic library, then re-grant the user permissions on the library, then test again, compare the result.

If this issue still exists, please check ULS log to find if there is something about this issue.

Thanks,

Wendy

Thanks Wendy. This user has full control to the site, and her access to the other document library is fine. I don't think it's permission related.

Hi Jessie,

To troubleshoot this issue, I suggest you check if the library has unique permissions via Library settings->permission for this document library. If it has unique permissions, you can check the permissions of the user on the library.

In addition, please check ULS log to find whether there is something about this issue. The default path of the ULS log file is: C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS.

Thanks,

Wendy

Thanks Wendy. The library has unique permissions, however have confirmed she's got full access to the library. The other user who are in the same user group can open in explorer with no issue.
