Wednesday, April 17, 2019 7:43 AM

Hi,

We have few XP machines which will be soon migrated to windows 10 and users have saved some of the files with longer names.

I would like to know the Maximum Length allowed for Folder/file name length.

Thank you!

Hi,

Thanks for your post in our forum.

according to my understanding and research, for windows version has the limit of the maximum path of the file/folder (including the driver and path). And it is 260 characters.

Now in Windows 10, the limit can be increased by the following group policy/registry.

1. group policy setting

path : Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > NTFS

setting: Enable NTFS long paths option

2. registry setting

path : HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

name : LongPathsEnabled (Type: REG_DWORD)

value : 1

And for more information, we can refer to the following link.

/en-us/windows/desktop/FileIO/naming-a-file#maximum-path-length-limitation

Hope above information can help you.

Thanks again for your understanding and support.

Best Regards,

Otto
