Tile Data model server - how to UNINSTALL/DISABLE! ?

Question

Sunday, January 17, 2016 11:25 PM | 2 votes

PLEASE stop forcing horrible bells and whistles down people's throats!

my PC just crashed and on a reboot (10 minutes!) the thing that is crashing now is the Tile Data model server - and I don't even WANT THOSE LIVE TILES ! (let alone the new start menu)

MICROSOFT PLEASE LISTEN!!!

a user should NOT have to go INTO powershells or advanced settings/services to turn OFF such SIMPLE features

and don't get me started on the data usage and network priority!

Tile Server is required for tile updates. It is set to "Automatic" by default.

In the Start Search type in Services.msc and hit the Enter key to launch Services.

Scroll down to "Tile Data model server" double click on it to open it's properties and change the status accordingly.

Hi even_t,

The main issue is the machine will crash, right?

To analyze the crash issue, please upload the dump files( C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP ) to OneDrive then paste the link here.

As for the "Tile Data model server", it is a system service running under "LocalSystem" account. It is not recommended make modifications to this service, it may result in unexpect behavior.
If you insist on making changes to it, we could try the following registry key. You will take the risk by yourself.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tiledatamodelsvc\Start
Value of 1 is automatic (Delayed), 2 is Automatic 3 is Manual 4 is Disabled

Best regards

We'll need the actual .dmp files to analyse the root cause of the issue.

Same.  If I am rendering video for work or games tile data model server affects my render times / frame rate significantly.  I am on the go and use a Surface Pro, which I know is less than ideal but that's what I got and it works for me.  At this time, this thread looks to be unresolved as simply disabling tile data model server creates other issues, including: right-click can become disabled (no context menus); quick launch icons like EDGE and the STORE become disabled; start menu no longer functions properly.

Why the hell would tile data be tied to right click?

Are Microsoft programmers insane or incompetent or both?

just let us easily turn off all this rubbish.

Tiles are just dumb as F*** on start menu

This will not work.  The Tile Data Model Server is a linked service and using the services UI will not allow you to modify the startup action.  Stopping the service also automatically restarts it.

See Tuesday, January 19, 2016 8:22 AM response by MeipoXu on how to change start/restart options by editing registry.

It works.

If desperate, in an elevated (Run As Administrator) PowerShell prompt:

Get-Service -Name 'tiledatamodelsvc' | Stop-Service | Set-Service -StartupType Disabled

Your machine might not work anymore, but the the Title Data model server Windows Service won't be running after the above commands are run.

To verify, in a regular PowerShell prompt (because you're not trying to change anything):

Get-Service -Name 'tiledatamodelsvc'

Use at your own risk.

If you think development is tough now, think how hard it was using punched cards :-)

This works. But I found turning Tiledatamodelsvc off breaks quite a bit on reboot. E.g DirectX, the entire start menu (even if you're not using any "Tiles".)

Indeed I was also trying to minimize resources on my Windows 10 build, when I noticed this one on under services. The reg trick does work, but prevents the start menu from working as well as the charm bar. It caused my login in times to increase added at least 10 seconds to the login time.

Other than that it was functional. used Quick launch which I had setup previously. and ran other task via task manager.

I re-enabled it mainly for the quick login time, and charm bar... I do use those.

After the ''Creators Update'' (Redstone 2?) noticed in Event Viewer that the tiledatamodelsvc with error 1115 is showing under Event ID Error 10005, whereas it did not log errors prior to this update.

I tried the regedit set to 0 deal but that just caused more issues. Is this thing tied to some sort of Network setting like in remote controls etc? I do not have a homegroup or anything tied to another computer an solely run this PC as a standalone.

Anybody have an idea as to what what would be causing these errors showing in the Event Viewer?

Using Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB, OS Build = 14393.0. Can confirm that with "Tile Data model server" disabled using the registry editor, the Start menu no longer works at all. Had to undo the change and reboot, now Start menu works OK again. What a moronic service...why can't we turn this off?

You can you nong, but you take the risk. If you and the other agro beavers on this post know so much, why are we not running your operating systems? the reason is because you do not have 1 to offer to us plebs because you are not as clever as you think you are. You can't even get a job @ Microsoft to instigate the changes you demand from the morons there.

Show a bit of respect in your correspondences.
