EXE files on External/USB storage will not run

Question

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 4:52 PM

Running Windows 10 Enterprise v1607.

When I go to run executable files on a USB drive, I get a permissions error. I can copy/paste/move/edit (where applicable) the EXE files fine. However, I can't run them, unless I move it to one of my internal drives/volumes.

I've tried everything I can think of online. I've made sure that permissions are right. I've even gone so far as to move the EXE files to a FAT formatted USB drive, to rule out user permissions. It will not allow them to run.

I've disabled all AV and my firewall, and that didn't help. I've checked RSOP, and all of my GPOs. Nothing is blocking access to removable drives. The same EXE files run fine inside of a Windows 8.1 Enterprise VM.

There has to be some Windows setting, somewhere, that is blocking execute access on external storage, but I've yet to find it. Anyone else experience this, and found a solution?

Please provide the permission error message with error code (if any).

Hi,

Open group policy editor, navigate to Computer Configurations > Administrative Templates > System > Removable Storage Access > Removable Disks: Deny Execute Access.

Disable this GPO: Removable Disks: Deny Execute Access.

Type gpupdate/force in CMD and test again.

Besides, there is a documentation may give you hint.

Nope, all RSA configurations are set to not configured, which by default lets them go through. I disabled them, just to see, but it didn't help.

Permission checks don't help. I'm getting that error even on FAT32 USB drives, which don't have permissions.

antivirus isn't stopping it. Even if I set the USB drives as exceptions, it's still not working.

The files aren't corrupt. If I drag-n-drop the file from the USB to the desktop, it runs fine. If I drag-n-drop back to the USB, BAM - permission error.

Where did EXE files come from?  Did you copy them from internal drives (from folders where some software were installed)?

It's because of "MultiPoint Connector" feature.

  1. Go to "Control Panel\Programs>Turn Windows features on or off".
  2. Uncheck "MutiPoint Connector" feature.
