Error message in return when a file stored in OneDrive is shared in Outlook client - "Your recipients couldn't be given access.."

Question

When we share a file that is stored in OneDrive as attachment in our Outlook client (as a link, not a copy), we get a message in return from Exchange instantly that say:

The sharing is working fine, but this error occurs every time and of course our user are thinking that the recipient cannot access the file.

Sharing in the same way works fine if the file is stored in SharePoint, but not in OneDrive.

I can't find any solution to this problem that we have had since July, do any of you have any tips for us?

Hi, I was in contact with Microsoft support regarding this issue, and it is a known issue.

Workaround is to

  • ignore the message about the error (fine if you know about it - confusing if not),
  • manually reset sharing permissions (not tried yet) or
  • adjust the settings for anonymous sharing on our tenant (this is not an option for us).

But in case you have some other tips for us:

I think it is an error for all users, many have reported the same issue.

I am on version 1809, build 10827.20138, checked with a colleague that is on version 1808, build 10830.20102 - but we have had the same issue since July, and we are on monthly release.

The error occurs only from Outlook desktop client.

Hi Tina,

Does this issue affect all users in your environment?
Did you attach the file via Attache file > Browse Web Locations > OneDrive?

To help troubleshoot the issue, please try testing by sending a message with an attached OneDrive file via OWA to see if the issue persists.

If the issue only occurs when the mail is sent from Outlook desktop client, please collect the detailed build number of your Outlook so that we can do further research on this.

Any updates, please feel free to post back.

Yuki Sun

Hi Tina,

Thanks for getting back to us with the valuable information you got from the Microsoft Support. Considering that it's a confirmed known issue, personally I'd like to recommend following the workarounds you shared above while waiting for a fix to be released. Or you may also consider reverting back to a previous build of Office to temporarily bypass the issue.

By the way, do you mind marking your post above as answer so that others who might have a similar issue can benefit from your thread? Thanks for your understanding and support :)

Regards,

Yuki Sun
