Question

I have created two Windows server VMs on Azure, both accessible via RDP over a VPN. I can connect to them with no problem, but all I see when I do is a black screen with a command prompt. If I dismiss the command prompt, there is no apparent interaction with the black screen.
I'd like to understand what is happening and how to fix it.

This issue could be caused by couple of different reasons. The VM might be running out of space in OS disk (C:\ or you might need to reinstall RDP role. You may refer similar MSDN threads Black screen on Login and VM shows blank screen and command prompt. Try the solutions provided there and see if those helps.

Few questions.
Are these machines on same resource group, region, and subscription? Is this consistently happening on any VM you own/create or just these 2 VMs? what windows server version did you install? which VM family, type did you pick?
Thanks,
Varun
