Netdiag gone from server 2012 r2?

Question

Friday, September 23, 2016 7:02 PM

So I've run into some possible dns issues. I'm attempting to troubleshoot and one of the tools I used to use was netdiag back in the old 2003-2008 days. However for some odd reason on server 2012 r2 netdiag doesn't exist.?? What the heck Microsoft?

So what are we supposed to use now for troubleshooting these issues? DCDiag is NOT THE CORRECT ANSWER.

And I have not been able to find anything in Microsoft forums other than questions from others about what happened to the tool.

Hi,

It seems that the relevant tests that were part of netdiag were moved to other diagnostics components. For example, dcdiag does a set of DNS tests specific to necessary functionality on domain controllers.  Other tools like ping, nslookup, ipconfig, etc. may help with the other things netdiag did in its all encompassing diagnostics check.

You also can run Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) scans either from Server Manager, by using the BPA GUI, or by using cmdlets in Windows PowerShell®. It can help administrators reduce best practice violations by scanning roles that are installed on managed servers
