The powerpoint files are ppt files and I've tested them with a Win7 machine with Office 2010 on it. The images are displayed fine but on computers with powerpoint 2016 is get empty boxes with a red x with the error "the picture cannot be displayed". I've also found that if I open the file on a Win7 machine with Office 2010, and save the powerpoint as pptx, files can be opened in 2016 without issues. Is there a hotfix or something i can install?

Hi,
What if we try saving the presentation file in .ppt format to a different location using the Office 2010 version? Can the file then be opened using Office 2016?
Besides, how did you insert pictures? Did you copy and pasted the images into PowerPoint file? We may remove the images in the file and then try inserting the images by going to Insert tab -> Images group -> Pictures and verify the results.

The powerpoint files originally came from Oxbox and worked perfectly fine on our computers with Win7 and Office 2010 but with computers with Win10 and Office 2016, it doesnt work. Its a resource so there lots of these ppt files, going back to a computer that hasnt been updated/reimaged yet and converting these files is going to be a PITA.

As far as I know, there is no direct way to see the type of the picture directly within PowerPoint. You may try to right click the picture, and select 'Save as Picture' from the context menu. See the 'save as type' in the opened dialog. Generally, the picture will be saved in its original type.
Are these online images or images inserted from local drive?

I'm having a similar issue, except on top of 'red x-ing' only images, it's wiping text and shapes off the page as well. I'm in the middle of designing a training presentation and with no warning about half my slides are now blank. It is BEYOND infuriating. And our IT department won't switch me to MS Office 64 bit because they think 32 bit will work just fine.
No images were deleted from my drive so that's not the case. And the shapes are PowerPoint shapes (i.e. rectangles, circles etc.) so this makes absolutely no sense. Now, I have to re-do an entire presentation because of some MS Office 2016 glitch they can't seem to fix. :-|

Unbelievable. I finally upgrade to 2016 after years of worrying about stuff like this. It's many GB in size. And now this, the night before a presentation I spent days working on!!
In 2018 !
Unbelievable.

Hello, I hope you managed to solve your problem. Its October 2018 and I found myself on the same spot you were. Luckily, I was able to find this post not to retake steps you guys had already been thru. I found a solution that works for me. I just control-x the image and then paste it as an image again. That solves my problem, probably because powerpoint takes care of the picture format.
Hope this helps!

The faced the same challenge while viewing one of the ppt emailed by my professor. In my case, the pictures were displayed fine when I open the ppt using my phone on powerpoint but on my laptop with Microsoft powerpoint 2016 and Windows 10 I faced the same issue. I tried saving the ppt as in older format 97-2003. And it worked for me. The issue is because there were many elements in the ppt which are no longer supported in the updated version.
