Deleted shared calendar appointments keeps returning.

Question

Wednesday, September 4, 2013 1:37 PM

We've been experiencing a peculiar issue with outlook 2010 (exchange 2013).

We have a shared calendar which is available to a select number of users all with publishing editor rights. For the last month, when an entry in there is cancelled and deleted from the calendar, it disappears from the share calendar only to reappear within the next 24 hours.

On looking at the entry, it says it was last updated by the main user calendar which is not used by anyone. It keeps any settings or changes that happens on it but it wont disappear permanently from the calendar.

User A: Shared calendar account (Owner)

User B: Publishing Editor

User C: Publishing Editor

Scenario: User B creates a calendar entry on the shared calendar. Few weeks later, the appointment is no longer needed and user b cancels the appointment which disappears from their account. 12 hours later, the calendar entry is back and according to User A's account, it says it was last modified about 1am. User C also has this issue and does not see the entry when user B cancels it.

So the question is why it keeps returning?

Bare in mind i have turned off cached mode on all 3 accounts so the updates to the server are in real-time.

I've also tested deleting it with Outlook Anywhere as well as holding down shift + delete. Each time, the entry disappears but always comes back.

Would appreciate any help.

Hi,

Thank you for your update.

Have you tried to delete it in OWA? Will the appointment come back?

Here are some other methods you could try:

1. Delete the appointment after you edit it.

To do this, double-click the appointment, and then remove or add some characters from the appointment. Save the change and try to delete the item again.

2. Empty the Deleted Items folder.

In Outlook, delete all items that are in the Deleted Items folder, and then try to delete the meeting request or message.

3. Delete it using MFCMAPI editor.

You can refer to this article:

http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/hidemovedeletemfcmapi.htm

MFCMAPI download link:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=2953

4. Try to give user B Owner permission on the shared calendar and then delete the item to test the issue.

Hi,

Based on my research, the .ost file may be corrupted locally.

Try repair the .ost file and then test the issue. To do this, please refer to:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/outlook-help/repair-outlook-data-files-pst-and-ost-HA010354964.aspx?CTT=1

Or, you could try to rename the .ost file and restart Outlook to recreate a new .ost file.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I've already tried that and recreated the whole profile. The account is only being used as a shared calendar, adn we only access it in order to specify rights for users.

Is it possible that the one of the users who have access to it has a corrupt ost which adds back the entry to the calendar?

Thanks, i'll give that a try and post feedback.

This issue really highlights the levels of Microsoft incompetence.

Repeatedly I have declined or deleted a recurring appointment, only for it to reappear in my calendar, and start reminding me, several days later.

I am completely astonished you cannot accomplish the simple act of removing items permanently from a users calendar.

I have now downloaded MFCMAPI to resolve what should have been achieved first time, in 2 seconds flat, several months ago.

I am using Outlook 2016.

MS pull your finger out! Now wonder you have to give away Windows 10 if this is any indication of your software engineering prowess!

And today, after deleting the message and reminders using MFCMAPI, they have all returned!

2016 and you cannot handle deletions...?

Good job work paid for the license because I'd be requesting a refund.

Did this work for you?

Hello, All.

Have deleted & declined the appointment both locally & via O365 to no avail.  Will give the .ost file a try & post.

Thank you.

Greetings,

Hopefully, you have had time to delete the .ost file and learned if you had success or failure. Please update, as I'm facing the same (or similar) issues.

Thanks

Alas, DialTone30019!  There was no joy in deleting the .ost file.

The deleted appointments had blissfully disappeared for 2 days & then came back in their full glory & annoying reminders.

We finally got the folks who SENT the appointments to delete them from their SENT folder & that seems to've done the trick.

Sorry for taking so long.  I keep forgetting other folks might just be having the same issues, & when one of us comes up with a solution, it's certainly shareable -- even if it may NOT work for others.

Cheers.

Here's what worked for me...

  • In Outlook, switch to the Calendar.
  • Click on Navigation Options, then Folders
  • This displays the shared folder under Deleted Items that was deleted earlier (but was not permanently removed)
  • Manually deleted the meetings in this folder
  • Deleted the folder - this second delete removed it permanently
  • (The folder delete does prompt to delete all the contents, so probably manually deleting the items may not have been necessary)

After this the reminders in the shared calendar were removed for good.

I guess this is equivalent to emptying the Deleted items folder, but I did not want to do that.

Hope this is of use to someone!
