DHCP Server for 2 different domains

Hello,

We have a Windows 2003 Domain called Domain A with a DHCP Server and DNS .
We have an other Windows 2008 Domain called Domain B with DNS .

We have a trust between Domain A and B .

Now, Workstations from Domain A receive Ip Adresse by DHCP.

Now, Workstations from Domain B use static IP Adresses.

We would like that workstation from Domain B receive Ip adresse by DHCP .

What is the best practices ?

Can we use DHCP Server From domain A to send Ip Adresse to workstation from Domain B ?

Do we have to insall DHCP server in Domain B ?

Hi,

Thank you for your post.

1. The simply way is to install DHCP in Domain B server. Since each domain has at least one DC, you could install DHCP on Domain B DC server.

2. If you want to Domain B using Domain A DHCP, like MrX mentioned, it will encounter Domain B workstation got Domain A DHCP options like DNS name/DNS server/default gateway. To workaround this issue, it need to set up Domain B  DHCP scope with separate options.
A. If two domains are in the same subnet, use the fixed IP for domain B. That means set reserved IP and option for Domain B.
B. If two domains are in the different subnet, it need to setup DHCP relay agent in one Domain B subnet server.

Yes, you can use DHCP Server from Domain A to broadcast IP addresses to Domain B computers. DHCP is  not AD dependent (besides the authorization issue), hence it can lease IPs to any computer, regardless of its domain; provided necessary changes have been done at your network level such as required ports, Vlans are allowed to enable workstations in domain B to receive IP from DHCP server from Domain A.

What is the best practices ?

In my perception, its better to have DHCP server per Domain to avoid unforeseen issues such as port restrictions, DNS issues or something else etc... 

Do we have to insall DHCP server in Domain B ?

Its up to you and your IT team to decide whether or not to go for a new  DHCP server in Domain B. As there is a way to have a DHCP server in Domain A to serve as DHCP for Domain B as well.

That said, Aforementioned suggestions are from my perception only. You may want to wait to hear from other forum members as well.

That is perfectly normal as assigned DNS suffix by DHCP server may cause problems for users of the second domain.

We would like that workstation from Domain B receive Ip adresse by DHCP .

What is the best practices ?

I would recommend separating users using two subnets. In each subnet, configure a DHCP server with right DNS suffixes.
