Restore all master pages to original?

Question

Monday, April 9, 2012 7:12 PM

Ugh okay, so I've done all sorts of stuff to these master pages and really need to just clear all changes and set them back to their original states.

This includes all different master pages for different types of sites (eg v4, minimalv4, etc) and variations life default and custom master.  I'm still pretty mind-boggled over how all this works, so if someone would be awesome enough to list some step-by-step instructions on how to back out to the very original states of each of these I would be utterly grateful!  I may have even edited the original of the v4 rather than making and setting and edited copy, so if all bases could be covered that would be so great...

Thanks!

You can 'Reset to Site Definition' : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jjameson/archive/2010/05/18/use-powershell-to-quot-reset-to-site-definition-quot-in-sharepoint-server-2010.aspx also SharePoint Designer 2010 have a "Reset to Site Definition" option to reset customized pages in the Ribbon under Page tab, it will revert back the master page also.

Hi,

You will need to visit "Site Settings" for every site and choose the option "Reset to Site Definition". Additionally, I have provided you with useful links on the introduction and how to customise master pages.

Thanks guys!  What all does this reset?  Want to make sure I don't wipe any settings other than the master pages...

Update:  I just tested this on a meeting workspace, resetting to site definition in SP designer for any master page that would allow it, and it didn't solve the problems workspaces experience when using custom masters...

Also reset whole site to template with no luck, still getting weird problems from using custom master..

Hi,

When you reset a customized page to the site definition, you discard all changes to that page and revert it to how it was originally defined in the site definition. But note that you don’t lose any customizations that you have made to Web Parts, as long as those Web Parts reside in a Web Part zone that exists on the site definition page. Web Part zones — and the Web Parts inside them — that you add to a site definition page are discarded when you reset the page.

hope this helps.

Cant for the life of me think then why I'm still getting this error.  I'm getting the infamous error message in the sidebar that I've read happens when a custom master page is set, and it doesn't go away even when i reset the site to the original layout...
