Question
Tuesday, March 13, 2018 1:26 PM
Morning guys,
I am trying to find a solution for a DHCP servers of mine that is showing several error messages in the event viewer like these:
The server detected that it is out of time synchronization with partner server: REMOTESERVER-HOSTNAME for failover relationship: LOCALSERVER-REMOTESERVER. The time is out of sync by: 3602 seconds .
After a few seconds, the event viewer shows that the error is fixed:
Server has established contact with failover partner server REMOTE-SERVER for relationship LOCALSERVER-REMOTESERVER
I have tons of DHCP FAILOVER realtions with the REMOTESERVER. More than 20 DHCP Servers are actually working fine and this is the only partner server that is sending out these error messages.
The LOCALSERVER is also a DC and there's no error in the time configuration or the time zone.
Does this ring any bells to you guys ? Thanks
Regards

Hi Selva,
Thanks for your question.
This issue happened with event ID 20253 when the DHCP server detected that it is out of time synchronization with its partner server.
In DHCP failover, whenever one of the server responds with an ACK to a client request, the same is updated in the database of the DHCP server with a timestamp and is sent to the partner for synchronization. This timestamp is at granularity of a second. If the partner server receives two synchronization updates from the other DHCP server with the same timestamp, it will reject the second request.
If the second request from the client is a release request then this causes the failover servers to go out of sync as the partner server will reject the synchronization update but the first server (which received the client request) will apply the update to its database.
Please try the following article and update the corresponding hotfixes on DHCP server.
Update for Windows Server 2012 (KB2919393)

Windows Server 2012 R2 Update (KB2919355)

Hope above information helpful.

Hi Michael,
I was busy on other things and I didn't have time to look at this issue. I have noticed that other DHCP servers are affected from the same issues^.
I have checked the servers and the hotfix has been applied on April 2014
Thanks for you help
