Opening Office 2007 Word and Excel documents using Office 365

Question

Monday, March 6, 2017 3:07 PM

I recently moved files and documents to a new PC from my older pc. The 2007 Office program was used on the old pc documents, so I purchased Office 365 for the new pc. Now when I click on Word or Excel documents directly they will not open. Message is "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed." However when I go to start and click on Word program and then find the same Word file it will open up. Same message occurs when  I try to open an Excel document.

What can I do to avoid going to the Word or Excel programs in start menu in order to open them?

Regards

Roger

Hi Roger,

Does this error only appear when you double click to open the old files?
What are the file extensions of these files?

To narrow down if the issue is caused by a file association error in Windows, please try right-clicking a problematic Excel file from Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, check if the current version of Excel is listed as the recommended program, please select it as such if it is not already there. You may need to browse for the Excel executable file via "Look for another app on this pc".

Besides, it is also recommended to try repairing Office via Control Panel to see if the issue can be fixed.

Any findings, please feel free to let us know.

Best regards,
Yuki Sun
