Locating and Deleting Reparse Points (Mounted Volume)

Summary: Faced a backup error code 0x81000037, looked through solution at support.microsoft.com*, used CMD to find reparse points, could not find files/folders listed in the results. Posted in Microsoft Community Forums and was asked to post here instead. I am not an IT professional. I will need detailed instructions. My main objective is to be able to run the Windows 7 backup on my Windows 10 laptop again.

I have admin rights on a laptop running Windows 10.

Prior to this incident, the laptop had another backup error (forgot the code) and ran CHKDSK /f /r /x to check for and fix disk problems.

I attempted to run backup again. After getting a different backup error (code 0x81000037), I deleted large files and folders. Both C: and D: drives are at 30% of their storage capacity. I attempted to run backup. I received the same error.

I ran a full antivirus scan using Norton 360 at the most aggressive heuristic setting and failed to detect any viruses to delete.

Then I followed the solution at support.microsoft.com to look for reparse points (https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/help/973455/windows-backup-or-restore-errors-0x80070001,-0x81000037,-or-0x80070003#workaroundissue12 -- I am unable to post links for now).

I started looking through the list to find the reparse points to delete but could not find certain files and folders.

1) I navigated to "[C:\Users]", but could not find "Documents and Settings" under "[C:\Users]" .

At this point, I am confused by the results of [ C:\dir /al /s ] . I will confess that I do not understand the results nor what I am looking for.

I would like guidance on what I am looking for, because what I see differs greatly from what is posted on support.microsoft.com (https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/help/973455/windows-backup-or-restore-errors-0x80070001,-0x81000037,-or-0x80070003#workaroundissue12).

I have also seen the Reparse Points (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365503(VS.85).aspx) and Reparse Point Operations (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365507(VS.85).aspx) web sites but I do not understand them. I need more detailed and user-friendly instructions and advice than what is offered on those pages.

Questions:

1) What do reparse points look like?

2) Am I looking for the right things? -- If I should not be looking for a file or folder, what should I be looking for?

3) Am I looking in the right way? -- If not, please specify the right way to look for it.

4) What should I do when I cannot locate the file or folder or even the higher-level folders?

In the statement "main objective is to be able to run the Windows 7 backup on my Windows 10 laptop again." The word 'again' stands out to me. So did this work?

If so what changed? What software was added?

Windows 7 backup error code 0x81000037 "Shadow files cannot be read." perhaps is interesting. Looking at the Answer that user states "gone through the so-called 'reparse points' and no success" but turns out if was Java for them stopping it work. So notice you Java listed. So try removing Java rebooting and see if that helps.

I just upgraded from W7 Ultimate 32 bit to W10 Pro 32 bit started backup and received "Directory was not backed up because it is a reparse point: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oracle\Java\Javapatch If you want it to be protected remove the reparse point. The Windows Support Team asked me to reinstall windows no change. No they want me to do a clean installation. If the Oracle\Java file is remove and reinstall will that clear the reparse point?

So I'm here because of

There is so much wrong with that workaround, someone should be fired. And the article is wrong, it has nothing to do with FAT. And I have no idea how to find or delete a mounted volume reparse point. And I don't believe deleting the junction points is relevant because the backups worked yesterday with the junctions intact.

I am also facing the same issue, while trying to take backup on windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

Didn't do any windows update also since I last backed up successfully.
